Mitzi wakes up feeling optimistic; like something good is going to happen today.
Being a very social person, Mitzi decides to try and find a pen pal. She hasn’t had a pen pal since she was a kid. Maybe it’ll be fun to have someone to write back and forth with now as an adult. She sends a request to the forums and just has to wait for a response.
Mitzi has earned a promotion at work but has no one to celebrate with. So she heads to the gym in Oasis Springs and lets out some of her frustration on the punching bags.
Now that her heart’s pumping, Mitzi would like to finish her workout on a treadmill, but there is only one left and there is a guy standing next to it. Mitzi approaches him.
Mitzi: Hey… are you going to be using this treadmill?
Guy: Hello! Um… no, go ahead… it’s all yours.
Mitzi gets on the treadmill, but the guy doesn’t leave.
Mitzi: Thank you!
Guy: No problem… no problem at all!
When the guy still doesn’t leave, Mitzi does her best to ignore him and talk to the lady on the treadmill next to her.
Mitzi: Hey, how are you?
Lady: Fine.
Mitzi: So, do you live here in Oasis Springs?
Lady: Yes.
The lady makes no attempt to expand on her one-word answers, so Mitzi gathers that she’s not in the mood to talk.
Guy: I’ll be glad to talk to you.
Mitzi: Were you planning on standing there until I got off the treadmill?
Guy: I plan on standing here for as long as it takes to get you to talk to me.
Mitzi: You know that’s creepy right?
Guy: Sometimes you have to do whatever it takes.
Mitzi: Well suit yourself.
Mitzi ignores the guy for the duration of her workout. He doesn’t leave and she doesn’t exactly tell him to go away. Mitzi becomes self-conscious when she turns off the treadmill because she knows that she’s smelly and she doesn’t want the guy to pick up on that. He finally walks away as she gets off the treadmill. She’s about to go in the other direction, but changes her mind…
Mitzi: Hey!
She calls to get his attention once again.
Suddenly Mitzi does want to talk to the guy, but she makes sure to stand away from him since she’s so sweaty.
Mitzi: So, do you always hang out at the gym and stalk the ladies?
Guy: No, but there’s something about you. I just felt the need to know you. I’m sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable.
Mitzi: *smiles* It’s okay. Maybe you can get to know me in a different situation… not when I’m all sweaty.
Guy: That sounds fine to me. I guess I’ll see you around then.
Mitzi: *waves* Yes… see you!
Mitzi watches the guy walk away and wishes she had at least given him her phone number. But she refuses to run after him; making herself look desperate.
Mitzi: *out loud to herself* Dang… I didn’t even get his name!
Lady: *to Mitzi* His name is Raymond.
Mitzi is surprised because the lady never gave any indication that she knew him. Then something dawns on her…
Mitzi: Oh my God! Is he your… are you two?
Lady: No… he’s my brother.
Mitzi is relieved now that she knows that she wasn’t just flirting with someone else’s man in front of them.
Mitzi: Thank you… I’m Mitzi by the way.
Lady: I’m Gladys… and my brother ain’t crazy or nothing. He never does stuff like that. He must really be interested in you.
Mitzi walks off with Gladys’ words in her mind; realizing that she’s interested in him too.
After showering and then being unlucky in her mission to find Raymond at the gym; Mitzi approaches Gladys once again.
Mitzi: I can’t seem to find your brother anywhere. I wanted to invite you both out to the park for burgers or something.
Gladys: He probably left… but I can give you his number. I’m sure he’d break his neck trying to get anywhere you wanted him to be.
Mitzi: Okay, I’ll take it.
Gladys agrees to go to the park with Mitzi but decides not to stay long once she gets there.
Gladys: Hey look, I’m not feeling very comfortable; being all sweaty from the gym. I’m going to head home and take a shower. Text my brother and I’m sure he’ll meet you here. I may come back later.
Mitzi: Okay… see you later.
Gladys leaves and Mitzi texts Raymond; asking him to meet her at the park.
Mitzi begins to cook while waiting to see if Raymond actually shows up. She wonders if it may be a little forward of her to have invited him out to the park so soon after meeting him. Before she gets to have second thoughts, Raymond is behind her.
Mitzi: *surprised tone* Hey… you’re here!
Raymond: Of course… what did you expect me to do? *sits down on bench* A beautiful woman invites me to the park for food… of course I’m showing up!
Mitzi brings the plate of burgers over to the bench and sits down.
Mitzi: It may not be the greatest meal you’ve ever eaten, but…
Raymond: If you made it… it’s the greatest.
Mitzi: *smiles* Thanks!
Raymond. I’m really glad you invited me. I thought for sure I had scared you away with my creepy man routine at the gym. I don’t know what came over me.
Mitzi: Actually… I was a little flattered.
Raymond: So what do you do for a living Miss Mitzi?
Mitzi: Well… I’m an aspiring comedian.
Raymond: Word? Tell me a joke.
Mitzi: Well… I consider myself more silly than funny, but I’m working on it.
Raymond: Oh I bet you’re very funny. When’s the next stand-up routine? I want to be there.
Mitzi: I haven’t worked my way up to that yet, but it’s coming… I can feel it!
Mitzi: What about you? What do you do?
Raymond: I’m interested in mixology, but right now I work as a cook in a small diner.
Mitzi: *suddenly embarrassed by her burger* If I’d known that… I wouldn’t have tried to cook for you. I’m a terrible cook!
Raymond: I didn’t want to be rude, but… I sort of gathered that. This burger is incredibly dry *covers face and smiles*.
Mitzi: *laughs* Well maybe one day you can give me some tips.
Raymond: Gladly. *quickly reads text* So, did my sister have anything to do with you inviting me here tonight?
Mitzi: She did assure me that you weren’t crazy and that you must really be interested in me.
Raymond: *slightly angered* I knew it! She just couldn’t resist running her mouth.
Mitzi: She just said it in defense of you.
Raymond: Yeah, but she shouldn’t have said anything.
Mitzi: Well, if she didn’t, maybe we wouldn’t be here right now.
Mitzi: And… I’m glad to be here with you.
Raymond: *calms down quickly* Yeah… me too.
Mitzi is extremely tired and reluctantly has to say goodbye to Raymond.
Mitzi: So, will I see you soon?
Raymond: I hope so!
Mitzi: Good night.
Raymond: Do you need me to see you home safely.
Mitzi: I’ll be alright… talk to you later.
Raymond: OK… good night.
Almost too tired to walk; Mitzi drags herself home.
