Mitzi’s promotion comes with new evening hours, so Mitzi has time to mill around in the mornings. She takes her time eating yogurt and watching TV.
Suddenly she gets a text message that puts a little more pep in her step.
Text from Raymond: Can you meet me at Magnolia Blossom Park in an hour?
Mitzi responds and arrives at the park in less than forty-five minutes.
Mitzi: Should we sit and talk?
Raymond: Of course… lead the way.
Mitzi purposely chooses the benches next to the playground where there are children playing.
Mitzi: So Raymond… I have to know, how do you feel about kids?
Raymond: Kids? *laughs* I love them! I can’t wait to have plenty of my own. Why would you ask that?
Mitzi: Well, the last guy I dated said he hated kids.
Raymond: Word? I can’t imagine the type of dude he must of been to never want to have kids with someone like you.
Mitzi: Aw… thanks.
Raymond: So, is dude completely out of the picture?
Mitzi: Yes, why do you ask?
Raymond: Cause if he’s out of the picture… maybe there’s room for me.
Mitzi: *smiles* Maybe…
Mitzi and Raymond remain silent for a few moments, both reflecting on what was just said.
Mitzi comes up with an idea to break the silence.
Mitzi: So, is this our official first date?
Raymond: I guess so.
Mitzi: We have to celebrate with a selfie!
Raymond: Okay… but you’d better text me a copy. I’ll print it and keep it next to my bed every night.
Mitzi: *laughs* Of course!
Raymond: So, do you think we could move to a bench away from the kids now, so we can really talk?
Mitzi: Talk about what exactly Ray?
Raymond: You…me…us.
Mitzi leads the way once again, but this time to a more isolated bench.
Mitzi: So why in the world is someone like you still single?
Raymond: I could ask you the same thing.
Mitzi: But I asked you first.
Raymond: Truth is… I haven’t been in a relationship in a long time. I can be a little tough to deal with.
Mitzi: How so?
Raymond: I can be stubborn and a little hot-headed at times.
Mitzi: Both heads?
Mitzi regrets the sexual innuendo as soon as it comes out of her mouth. It leaves both her and Raymond feeling very awkward.
Mitzi stands up to walk off some of her embarrassment for a moment, then sits back down.
Mitzi: I’m so sorry Ray. That was so stupid and inappropriate.
Raymond: It’s okay.
Although Raymond says it’s okay, Mitzi can tell that the air between them is still awkward and beyond repair… at least for the moment.
Mitzi: Uh… I have to be at work in a few minutes, so…I…I guess I’d better go.
Raymond stands up quickly as if he is the one that has to be at work.
Raymond: OK… see you tomorrow. *walks away*
Mitzi watches Raymond walk away, but instead of feeling bad… she feels hopeful. Raymond didn’t say goodbye, as in ’have a nice life’. He said, ’see you tomorrow!’ Maybe she hasn’t completely ruined things between them.
Mitzi goes straight home after work and attempts to make herself some fish tacos. She’s pleased when they actually come out edible. As soon as she starts to worry a little about what happened between her and Ray at the park, she receives a text from him. It says just one thing…
Text from Raymond: Yes, both heads.
Mitzi laughs out loud; one, because it’s funny and two, because she knows it’s Ray’s way of smoothing over the awkwardness between them.
