Ray, Gladys, and Mitzi all arrive at the Blue Velvet, but at first… Mitzi seems to be the only one excited. That is until Ray and Gladys realize that the music at the Blue Velvet is actually pretty good.
Raymond: Mitz… isn’t that a mic over there? Why don’t you try out the new set you just wrote.
Mitzi: I don’t know about that Ray. It’s a little rough right now.
Raymond: Better to try it now in a mostly empty club, than tonight at work. I have faith in you… you’ll do fine!
Mitzi: *grabs Ray’s hands* Maybe you’re right.
Mitzi grabs the mic and tries out one of her new jokes.
Mitzi: Ladies… is it just me? Or are ex-boyfriends sort of like magnets. You go out with your new boyfriend and the ex always seems to be there too. You spot him first and try to hide, but it’s inevitable that he’s going to see you.
A lady from the club walks over to listen to Mitzi, which makes Mitzi more nervous.
Mitzi: And… uh… yeah, he sees you, no matter what you do. You can go to the bathroom and his ass will be in the stall waiting for you with the same old tired line, ’hey girl, I know you miss me’. And you’re like… um…you’re like, ’no, actually I don’t’ and it never fails…
Mitzi feels like her joke is going nowhere fast.
Mitzi can’t even get the punch line out, even as Ray and the lady who had been listening waits.
Mitzi: I’m sorry ya’ll, this is a new set and it still needs work.
Lady: That’s okay girl… good start though!
Despite the lady’s attempt to reassure her, Mitzi still feels like a failure.
Mitzi: It was awful Ray, just like I knew it would be!
Ray doesn’t respond. Instead, he kisses Mitzi tenderly on the cheek. The kiss makes Mitzi feel really special and comforts her better than anything he could have said at that moment.
Most people would lie and say that the set wasn’t that bad. Only a good friend would tell the truth. Ray tells the truth…
Raymond: The material was good, but the delivery was pretty bad. You’re going to have a few bad sets in your career. But, they aren’t failures. *Ray caresses Mitzi’s cheek* They are steps that you have to take in order to get better. *Lifts Mitzi’s chin* Now you have to hold your head up and celebrate the fact that you are one step closer to success *takes both of Mitzi’s hands in his and brings them to his lips* I’m proud of you for even trying.
It’s at this pivotal moment that Mitzi realizes that she’s at risk of falling deeply in love with this man.
(*cringes at the clipping* Did I not notice that when this was first posted?? 😬)
Ray’s motivational talk has calmed Mitzi down, but they decide to have a few drinks anyway.
Ray can’t resist sitting down at the piano. He begins to slowly peck at the keys. While he’s distracted, Gladys sees an opportunity to talk to Mitzi about her brother.
Gladys: My brother would be pissed if he knew I was saying this but…I’m saying it anyway. I can tell that he really likes you.
Mitzi: Really? I really like him too.
Gladys: I can tell. I think you were meant for each other.
Mitzi: Why would he be mad at you for telling me this?
Gladys: Because I sort of sabotaged a few of his past relationships.
Mitzi: What? Why?
Gladys: He was attracting women that were just no good for him and he didn’t seem to see it… so big sis had to step in and show him exactly who he was dating. It was never that hard because it’s tough for a person to hide who they really are for too long. Ray never appreciated it though.
Mitzi: I’d imagine not.
Gladys: You’re different though… I knew that when we first saw you at the gym.
Mitzi: Um… thank you?
After her short conversation with Gladys, Mitzi excuses herself to visit the restroom. Ray is waiting for her when she comes out.
Mitzi: Hey, what’s up?
Raymond: It’s time for me to leave. I have to be at work soon.
Mitzi: Okay… I need to leave soon too.
Raymond: *pulls Mitzi closer to him* Text me, okay?
Mitzi: Sure thing…
Ray gives Mitzi a passionate goodbye kiss.
Mitzi walks out onto the club’s balcony and watches as Ray heads up the street.
Later on that evening, Mitzi returns home from work and is shocked when she goes to the mailbox and sees the amount of her bills. She’d love to have someone who could help her out with her living expenses… like a roommate, or better yet… a roommate with benefits. That’s when she decides to text Ray.
Text to Ray: Spare keys under the mat if you want to come over after work.
Mitzi plans on staying up to see if Ray actually shows up, but sleep gets the best of her. A few hours later, after a very tough shift, Ray drags himself into the house; ready for a good night’s sleep next to the woman that he feels himself quickly falling for.
