Top-Notch comedy club ended up being like a massacre. Four elderly people died in all. Mitzi doesn’t ever remember feeling as bad as she does while leaving the comedy club.
Mitzi would rather not let Trent see her at her gloomiest, but the trip home does nothing to improve her mood.
Mitzi slips into the house without Ray seeing her. She buries herself under the covers and sobs.
Raymond: Do you hear that Trent? Is that your mother?
Trent: Yeah… she just walked by…she looked sad.
Raymond: *walks toward the bedroom* What the?
Ray enters the bedroom and sees that Mitzi is under the covers; her body shaking from her bawling.
Raymond: Mitzi?
Mitzi: *muffled voice* Go away, Ray!
Despite Mitzi’s request for him to go away, Ray sits down on the bed.
Raymond: Now you know I can’t do that… now come up from under those covers and tell me what’s wrong.
Mitzi reluctantly complies.
Mitzi: I’m quitting comedy Ray!
Mitzi leaves the room.
Ray hurries out of the bedroom and cuts Mitzi off as she walks toward the bathroom.
Raymond: Quitting comedy? Why Mitzi? Did you have a bad set?
Mitzi: *sarcastic tone* Oh I don’t know Ray… everyone died before I could ask them!
Raymond: *gently grabs Mitzi’s arms* Wait, what? Are you serious? What do you mean?
Mitzi: *defeated tone* They literally died! While I was delivering my set… four old people died… right there on the damn stage.
Raymond: *shocked but immediately recovers* But… that’s not your fault. It was just their time!
Mitzi: Their time?! Ray… did you hear me? Four people… four people died while I was performing… at the same time, on the same day. It couldn’t have just been their time! I’m cursed Ray… I just know it.
Ray sees that there would be no convincing Mitzi of anything while she’s still in her feelings. Besides that it’s time for him to go to work.
Trent: Mommy… you can’t quit comedy! You’re the best!
Hearing the sincerity in Trent’s tone, Ray knows that Trent will be able to convince Mitzi of far more than he ever would.
Mitzi: But people died Trent. I told my jokes and they died.
Trent: They died happy mommy!
Mitzi: What? How do you know?
Trent: They died while hearing your jokes. That’s the best way… they died laughing.
Mitzi paused and thought about what Trent said. Then she kneeled down and gave him a big hug.
Mitzi: You’re right baby! They died laughing.
Trent: Yes!
Mitzi: You just don’t know how much better that makes me feel!
Mitzi decides to call and check in on Beverly. Beverly still seems very bothered about what happened at the comedy club. It’s time for Mitzi to get ready for work, but she’s worried about Beverly.
Mitzi: Trent, after I leave… could you go over and hang out with Aunt Beverly for awhile? She was at the club with me when those people died.
Trent: Okay mommy!
Mitzi feels better knowing that Trent is more than capable of lifting Beverly’s spirits.
Mitzi leaves for work feeling much better; still hearing Trent’s words of childhood wisdom ringing around in her head.
After his mother leaves for work, Trent walks across the street to Beverly’s house and uses his same reasoning to cheer her up as well.
As Beverly and Trent are talking, Beverly’s new boyfriend Anthony walks out of the house.
Trent: Aunt Beverly, who’s that?
Beverly: Oh, that’s my friend Anthony. *to Anthony* Come over and say hello to my best friend’s son, Trent.
Anthony introduces himself to Trent and Beverly is pleased to see that he seems to be pretty good with children.
Trent returns home, completes his homework, and gets into bed. A few hours later, Mitzi and Ray drag themselves home from long exhausting days at work.
