On their way to school the next day – Greg has pretty much come to terms with the fact that things are over with Ebony, but Kisha still thinks there’s a chance.
Newly retired Ray wakes up and begins to prepare a Spinach Frittata for breakfast. Mitzi comes in to clean up the counters…
Mitzi: Is it me…or has our kitchen gotten smaller?
Raymond grabs his plate and sits at the table. Mitzi joins him.
Mitzi: Do you think we should downgrade into a smaller home once the kids are grown?
Raymond: Maybe…as long as we have a nice kitchen and space for a garden.
Ray is out back working on his garden when his sister Gladys stops by.
Mitzi: Gladys! What a nice surprise!
Mitzi: So Gladys…how’s your boyfriend Quinn?
Gladys: Dead.
Mitzi: That’s ni – wait! What? Did you say…dead?
Gladys: Yep…he died about a week ago.
Mitzi: Oh, sorry…I didn’t know.
Gladys: It’s okay…better him than me.
Mitzi’s not sure how to respond to that.
Kisha and Greg arrive home from school…
Gregory: I know you couldn’t resist talking to Ebony. So, what did she say?
Kisha: I’m sorry Greg – she said that she’d rather remain…um…’distant friends’.
Gregory: Yeah…I pretty much figured that.
Kisha: I’m sorry…I really tried. She just thinks that you’re a little too negative…and that you bring down her mood.
Gregory: I guess she’s right. The first thing I did when I saw her was complain about running into her dad.
Kisha: Oh well. But no sad faces! I know – let’s go swimming!
Greg lets Kisha talk him into going to Oasis Springs Pool with her.
Kisha gets into the pool, but Greg just sits on the side. Kisha’s not okay with that…
Kisha: What’s the point of being at the pool if you’re just going to sit there?
Reluctantly, Greg gets in…just to appease Kisha.
Greg stays in the water until he’s convinced Kisha that he’s feeling better. As he’s leaving the pool…Greg runs into another teenager who looks like he’s had a really bad day.
Gregory: Uh…hey there. You look like I feel.
Abrey: Huh?
Gregory: I was just saying that you look like you had a bad day. Um…I’m Greg.
Abrey: Oh…hi. I’m Abrey.
Gregory: My sister pretty much forced me to come here, because I also had a bad day. Being in the water actually made me feel better. Maybe a swim would make you feel better too.
Abrey: I guess…
Gregory: Come on…we can at least try.
Gregory: So…do you want to talk about it?
Abrey: No…not really. I don’t even want to be here.
Gregory: I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to force you to –
Abrey: No, I don’t mean here with you…I meant… I wanted to stay home, but my little sister wanted to come play at the playground and my mother forced me to come keep an eye on her while she’s at the spa.
Gregory: Oh
Greg and Abrey spend a few awkward moments in silence. Suddenly Greg slips into the water…
Gregory: Well…you’re here now…you might as well get in!
Abrey: No I –
Gregory: Come on…I promise you’ll feel better.
Abrey: Okay…why not?
Abrey: Thanks for trying to make me feel better, but…I have to go now. Can I call you sometimes?
Gregory:Of course! It was nice to meet you.
As Abrey was leaving, Greg realizes that his face is hurting in an unusual way. Wondering why; he discovers that he has actually been smiling the whole time. Being around Abrey actually makes Greg feel…happy.
Kisha doesn’t notice that Greg has found a potential friend. She’s too busy trying out a few yoga poses.
Greg is feeling pretty good as he goes to grab a snack from the vending machine. he doesn’t even notice when Ebony shows up behind him.
Ebony feels bad about what she said to Kisha about Greg at school earlier that day, so she decides to walk away. Greg is still oblivious.
Greg finds Kisha looking a bit grungy.
Gregory: Ugh…what have you been doing? Are you ready to go yet?
Greg finally spots Ebony after she gets out of the pool.
Ebony: Hi Greg.
Gregory: How you doing Ebony?
Ebony: Fine…I really wanted to apologize for yesterday and what I told Kisha today. I’m sure she told you.
Gregory: Yeah, but it’s no big deal. I understand.
Ebony: You do?
Gregory: I was being an ass when I came over your house. I shouldn’t expect you to want to be around me.
Ebony: Well…I was a bit harsh. I wouldn’t mind hanging out sometimes. Maybe we can catch a movie or two.
Gregory: Maybe. I’ll see you around. *gives Ebony a high five and walks away with a big smile on his face*
Back at home…
Kisha: Hey dad! What’s up with the shirt? Are we going on vacation?
Raymond: No…this is my newly retired outfit.
Kisha would normally say something sarcastic right about now, but she’s not in the mood.
Kisha: Oh…okay. Looks good on you!
Raymond: *surprised* Thanks!
Later, as Kisha and Greg are doing homework and eating dinner…
Kisha: Greg, I feel real bad that things didn’t work out with you and Ebony.
Gregory: I don’t.
Kisha: You don’t?
Gregory: I’m just not cut out for a girl like Ebony. I’m not very social and I prefer to be alone. I almost feel relieved because I don’t have to pretend.
Kisha: Yeah…I guess you’re right.
