The sadness, tears and whole cemetery thing is just a bit too much for Greg. He needs to get out of here…
Greg arrives in front of Abrey’s house in Newcrest a few moments later. Abrey’s mom and little sister, Tess, are out front when he gets there. he attempts to slip past undetected, but it doesn’t work.
Leigh: Are you looking for Abrey? I’m his mother Leigh.
Gregory: Yes ma’am…is he home?
Leigh: He sure is…follow me!
Greg is following Abrey’s mom inside when suddenly his little sister Tess speaks up…stopping him in his tracks.
Tess: Are you my brother’s new boyfriend?
Greg goes back out to the porch where Tess is still standing.
Gregory: Your brother had a boyfriend?
Tess: Yeah, but you’re much better looking.
Gregory: Did his boyfriend live in Newcrest?
Tess: No…he lived where we used to live. Things didn’t turn out well, so we had to move here.
Greg wants to hear more but feels guilty about getting this information from Abrey’s little sister, rather than from Abrey himself.
Greg enters Abrey’s house and heads toward the family room. Tess walks behind him the whole time chatting about Abrey.
Tess: I like living here, but I miss my old friends. I don’t blame Abrey though…it’s not his fault that kids are mean.
Gregory: So you moved because kids were mean where you used to live?
Tess: Not all kids. There were some nice ones, but mommy says that a lot of people in our old town were…what’s the word? …Intoberate?
Gregory: Do you mean intolerant?
Tess: Yeah…intolerant.
Gregory: Intolerant of Abrey?
Tess: Yeah…because he had a boyfriend instead of a girlfriend.
Abrey finally joins Greg and Tess on the couch.
Abrey: Hi Greg…I see you met my sister Tess. What are you two talking about?
Gregory: Tess was telling me the reason why you all moved to Newcrest.
Abrey: Tess! You can’t just go around telling everybody that!
Tess: Well…I thought…because he’s your friend.
Abrey: I wanted to tell him when I was ready.
Tess: I’m sorry, Abrey!
Tess: I didn’t think it was a big deal. Mommy said that you shouldn’t be ashamed…it’s who you are.
Abrey: I know, Tess…but not everyone feels that way.
Tess: Oh
Abrey: Can you excuse us, so that we can talk?
Tess: Okay
Gregory: Nice to meet you, Tess.
Abrey seems to be feeling a bit uncomfortable, so Greg slides over closer to him; hoping it’ll put him more at ease.
Gregory: What part didn’t you think I’d understand?
Abrey: *sighs* The part where I’m attracted to boys. We moved here because I was getting harassed and bullied every day. Everyone that I thought was my friend…I lost…after they…
Abrey trails off and doesn’t continue. He appears to be waiting for Greg’s reaction. Gregory wants to be brave and say everything that’s in his heart, but fear takes over. So he reveals just a part of what’s on his mind to Abrey.
Gregory: Well…you won’t lose me as a friend…ever.
Abrey: You know…I had a feeling that you wouldn’t treat me any differently when you found out.
Gregory: Never. You’re my only friend…the first person I’ve ever felt a connection with over my whole life.
Greg and Abrey decide to go outside to the backyard when Leigh and Tess return to the living room. Greg tries not to allow the sadness over his dad’s passing to bring him down, but he can’t help it as the feelings take over once again.
Abrey: So, why did you come over today? I know it wasn’t just to hear my sister blab on about my past.
Gregory: No…I was too upset to tell you, but my father passed away last night at my brother’s wedding. We just left the cemetery…and I-
Abrey: Oh…I’m so sorry.
Abrey immediately jumps up to give Greg a hug…
Abrey: I’m here for you…I’m glad you came to me.
Gregory: Me too
Having Abrey close makes Greg feel an unexpected happiness…a happiness that sort of makes him feel guilty during this time of mourning.
The guilt is too much for Greg and leaves him feeling conflicted.
Gregory: Can I use your bathroom?
Abrey: Sure, you passed it on your way in.
Gregory: Thanks.
Greg needs to regroup, so he drags himself through the house and into the bathroom.
Greg leaves the bathroom to look for Abrey after running some water over his face. He finds him in a room next to the living room; with a grand piano.
Abrey: I hear that music can make any situation better. Can you play something for me?
Gregory: I can try, but I’m not very good.
Abrey: I’m sure that I’d love whatever you play.
Greg slowly plays a couple of easy piano tunes that he knows and does begin to feel a little better.
