Kisha picks Zena up two hours late…
Kisha: What’s the matter, Zee?
Zena: *saddened tone* You didn’t follow the plan.
Kisha: I didn’t, did I? I’m so sorry Zena…I wasn’t thinking *gives Zena a big hug* Mommy had to finish up some of her work…but I’ll try not to let it happen again.
Kisha’s just now realizing that everything is not about her. Now that she’s a mom, she’ll have to put Zena’s wants and needs before her own.
Kisha spends a few minutes outside with Zena before starting dinner…
Kisha: Did you at least have fun at daycare?
Zena: A little…I didn’t really have anyone to play with, but I did get a chance to help with the babies.
Jeff arrives home soon after Kisha’s dinner is ready.
Zena: Daddy!
Jeffrey: *gives Zena a hug* How was your day?
Zena: Good, but mommy forgot to follow the plan.
Jeffrey: Did she?
Kisha: Well…I didn’t forget-
Jeffrey: Zena, you have to remember that mommy has a very important job and sometimes she has to work a little longer to keep us all safe from bad guys.
Kisha appreciates Jeff for sticking up for her.
Zena: How was your day daddy?
Jeffrey: Not as fun as yours and mommy’s I’m sure. I spent the day collecting dirty towels and cleaning up after sweaty athletes with stinky feet.
Zena: Ewww!
Jeffrey: Ewww is right!
Jeff and Zena aren’t hungry for dinner, but they join Kisha at the dinner table anyway.
Jeffrey: It’s okay, though…I won’t have to do it for long. I’ll be getting a promotion soon.
Zena: What’s a pwomotion?
Jeffrey: Pro-mo-tion…and it’s when your boss finally gives you the job you deserve and pays you better.
Zena: Oh
Kisha is too tired to participate in the conversation, but she enjoys listening to Jeff being such a great dad.
Jeffrey: Guess what kiddo!
Zena: What?
Jeffrey: It’s bedtime.
Zena: But I don’t want to go to bed.
Jeffrey: What?! But going to bed is the best time of the day!
Zena: *excited* Really? Why?
Jeffrey: Because you get to hear me read the best stories in the world. Except these are bedtime stories and you can only hear them when it’s time to go to bed!
Kisha sneaks off to the bedroom for a nap, while Jeff continues talking to Zena.
Zena: I want to hear them!
Jeffrey: So…you agree that it’s bedtime?
Zena: Yes!
Jeffrey: *pulls out a book* Okay…here goes!
Jeff stops reading…
Zena: So what happens next?
Jeffrey: We have to find out tomorrow…the next chapter is like 20 pages long!
Zena: That’s okay! I’m ready!
Jeffrey: But my voice is not…so let’s get to bed and we’ll read it tomorrow.
Zena: Okay daddy.
Kisha is waking up from her short nap when Jeff walks into the room…
Kisha: You are so good with her.
Jeffrey: So are you…but we’re wasting time.
Kisha: Wasting time for what?
Jeffrey: Wasting time for doing the things that grown people do when the kids are sleeping.
Kisha: Oh…well, let’s not waste any more time!
Kisha: *seductive tone* I can keep the cop uniform on and pretend to arrest you.
Jeffrey: Hmmm…maybe one day, but today, I’d rather see you in your birthday suit!
