Valid Argument

Jalisa is on the computer getting a head start in the law career when Jalin ascends the stairs.

Jalisa: Where are you going, Jay?

Jalin: Uh – to my bedroom.

Jalisa gets up and walks over to him.

Jalisa: That isn’t your bedroom anymore.

Jalin: What do you mean?

Jalisa: You made a valid argument the other morning, so your dad and I talked, and we decided that it’s time for you to have your own bedroom.

Jalin: But where?

Jalisa: Follow me…

Jalisa leads Jalin down the stairs.

They enter the media room.

Jalisa: We’re going to change this into a bedroom for you.

Jalin: The media room? Will I get to keep the big TV?

Jalisa: No, all of this is coming out.

Jalin: Can I at least keep the double bed?

Jalisa: No, that’s coming out too. We’ll move your furniture down here, and you’ll get to help pick out the color of your walls. But there’s a small catch.

Jalin: What’s that?

Jalisa: We’ll still need to come through your bedroom to get to the backyard from time to time. Are you okay with that?

Jalin: I guess so – as long as you knock.

Jalisa: Deal! By the way, you have your own bathroom and shower down here now. *sniffs* I suggest you use it.

Jalin: Yes, ma’am. And thanks, for – you know, listening.

Jalisa: You’re welcome, Jay!

Some time, paint, and a little decorating later – Jay’s bedroom is complete. He’s chosen his favorite colors, and he even negotiated with his parents to keep the mini-fridge and popcorn maker.

Jay is happy that he has his own space to play video games and practice his violin, away from his sisters’ complaints.

Two floors up, Lia reacts to having Jay out of her and Me-Me’s bedroom.

Jamelia: We can run around undressed in here now!

It’ll probably never happen, but it’s nice to know it’s possible. She and Me-Me enjoy an impromptu dance party right before it’s time to climb into bed.

Jalisa relaxes in her bedroom, happy to have solved another family issue. She’s hoping the solution will cut down on some of the teen moodiness around the house.
