I didn’t have to wait too long before Lizzie finally entered the room dressed like she was returning from handling some type of emergency. As if she read my mind…

“I hope you haven’t waited long…I was working the ER downstairs.”

I was so happy to see Lizzie, that my bad mood seemed to subside instantly, “No, not long.”

Lizzie sat down near me. “I was surprised to see you on my schedule today Val.  Is everything okay?”

“That’s what I’m here to find out Liz.  I haven’t been able to eat anything in two days.”

With a mischievous smirk on her face, “Two days? Have you been feeling nauseous? Any pain in your breasts?”

I knew exactly where she was going with her line of questioning. “I’m not pregnant Liz!  You know I haven’t been with anyone in over a year now.  This is serious!”

“I had to ask.  I feel like you’ve been avoiding me and I thought maybe it was because you met someone.”

“I haven’t been avoiding you…I just haven’t been feeling well!”

“Okay, okay…I’m sorry.  Tell me about your symptoms.”

“I eat something…and I’m okay for a few minutes, then I get this intense pain in my stomach followed by nausea.”

“Does anything ever come up?”

“You mean do I actually throw up?  No…it just hurts like hell.”

“Can you tell me anything else, Val?  Have you had a rapid pulse lately or a stiff neck…perhaps a headache?”

“No Lizzie…none of that.  I’m just hungry all the time…like it can’t be satisfied. Then I eat and moments later I’m in pain.”

Lizzie scrunches up her face like she’s deep in thought. I know that look…it means she has no idea what the hell is wrong with me.  I decide to tell her about the spots on my neck…in hopes that it’ll all ring a bell for her.

“Oh…there is one more thing!  The other day I woke up and discovered these two new moles on my neck.  They don’t itch or hurt, but they worry me a little.”

Lizzie finally reacts. “Well, maybe I should take a look at them.  Did they sort of just appear or is it that you didn’t notice them until now?”

“I don’t know, but I’m pretty sure they weren’t there the previous day.”

Lizzie comes over to examine my neck.

“Well, I admit that they are a little unusual…but they don’t look malignant. I think they’re just bug bites. Have you been spending time outside?”

My bad mood was returning. “That’s it? Bug bites? That’s all you have for me? I haven’t eaten in two days and there’s a thunderstorm going on in my stomach…and that’s all you have for me?”

“Well…I can run some tests – a full blood screen and get a closer look at those spots.”

“Yes…please, Lizzie.  I really need to know what’s going on with me.”

“Okay…I’ll get things set up and send my nurse in to get some blood from you.  See you in a minute.”
Lizzie left the room.

Once again, I was alone allowing my imagination to get the best of me.  Lizzie may not have thought that anything was wrong with me, but I knew there was.  And it was serious.

Bernie the nurse reentered the room…

“I’m here to get some blood from you, then I’ll take you to the lab.”

I was terrified of needles, but if that’s what it took to potentially find some relief for my symptoms, then I was willing to do it without even flinching.

The whole process of completing the blood work and other labs took about an hour.  After it was all said and done, Lizzie came to me with the results…

“There’s nothing wrong with you Val.  You’re as healthy and strong as an ox.“

“There has to be something wrong with me, Lizzie! I haven’t eaten in days.  What am I supposed to do about that?”

Lizzie was a bit startled by my outburst. “I’m sorry Val.  I ran every test that I could think of.  We tested your blood sugar…I even tested your blood for hCG just in case – “

“I told you that I’m not pregnant!”

Lizzie did her best to keep her voice calm…I knew it was only because we were friends.

“There’s nothing else I can do for you.  Maybe go home and try to eat a simple broth…then work your way up to bigger meals.  That’s the only thing I can suggest, then if…”

I couldn’t hear the rest of what Lizzie was telling me.  Her words trailed off into what sounded like a cacophony of babble. I was suddenly distracted by something else…

There was a strange scent in the air…something that I  didn’t recall ever sensing before.  My stomach felt the way it would if my nose suddenly picked up the scent of bar-b-que in the air after starving myself before a picnic.

“Val…are you listening?  Are you okay?”

I turned and hurried towards the waiting room.  I had to find out what that smell was.

Lizzie watched me walk away, then called after me, “Val…I need to know if you’re okay!”

“Yeah…I’m fine Lizzie.  I’ll see you at home. Thanks…”

I looked around the waiting room, trying to figure out what was drawing me to it.  That’s when I saw what it was…

The lady in the waiting room had two badly scraped knees.  Although they were bandaged…I could still see that there was blood all around the wounds.

I suddenly wanted to be close to the lady, but I couldn’t figure out why…

…that is until my stomach began to growl like it’s never growled before.  I was starving and for some reason, it seemed that the blood was the key to fixing that.

I didn’t understand that, but somehow I knew it was true.  Before I could stop myself, I walked closer to the lady.

“What happened to your knees?”

The lady didn’t act like my question was so unusual. She grinned and gladly told me, “Stupid me…jumped on my boyfriend’s motorcycle trying to show out and somehow ended up on the ground with two scratched-up knees.”

I walked even closer…my eyes never leaving her beautifully scraped and bloody knees.

I sat down beside her,  “Can I see them?”

That question didn’t come off as anything but weird.  The lady responded the way any normal person probably would, “See what?  My knees?”

“Yeah…your knees.”

“What the hell? No, you can’t see them.  Are you a doctor or something?”

My voice became a bit more forceful and slightly desperate, “No…I just need to see them.  I need to see what happened to them.  I want to see the blood!”

“Are you crazy?  Get the hell away from me!”

Deep inside I knew that I was crossing a line, I tried to stop myself but another part of me kept going like a runaway train…

“Let me see them…let me see them now!” I held up my fists as if I were about to punch her.

She started shouting…“No you crazy bitch!  Get the hell away from me.”

Gemma hurried into the waiting room, “What’s going on here?  Vala…are you okay?”

Somehow Gemma’s words snapped me out of the madness.  I jumped up, but by then the lady was already worked up and wasn’t about to calm down.

“No, she’s not okay!  She’s crazy…asking to see my bloody knees.  Is this a clinic or an insane asylum?”

“I’m sorry,” I said as I hurried out of the waiting room as fast as I could.

“Sorry my ass…get yourself some help bitch!”
I left the room but stood outside the door listening. Gemma stood there confused, not sure what to do.  The lady in the waiting room was staring at the closed doors, probably afraid that I’d come back.

“You should have called security on her!”

Gemma did her best to defend me. “She’s a regular here.  She’s not usually like that. I think she’s having a nervous breakdown or something.”

I remained  by the closed doors for a while longer, thinking about what the lady had just said…”get yourself some help bitch!”

Although she couldn’t hear me through the closed doors, I still responded, “That’s what I was trying to do.”

Just saying that out loud made me feel even more helpless.
