There’s so much to think about and tons of planning to do if I hope to try and pull off everything I plan to do for me and my baby. But for now, I retreat to the water and relax. I’m not the only one. Merit, Aunt Sophia, and Uncle Duane all go out to the beach after we return from the cemetery.

After leaving the water, I decide to spend some time with my little brother. I join him on the beach, and we begin to build a sand sculpture while I attempt to catch up on what’s been going on with his life.

Prosperity: So…do you have a boo or anything, little bro?

Merit: *slight blush* No, but there’s someone that I sort of like.

Prosperity: Oh really, who’s the lucky person?

Meri seems reluctant to answer. I can see him visibly struggling with it.

Merit: Well…um, can I ask you a question?

Prosperity: Of course.

Merit: Mommy and Auntie Michelle aren’t real sisters, are they? Like, related by blood?

Prosperity: No. They grew up in the same group home. Why?

I’m wondering if his question related to his crush or if he’s asking in general. He shuts me down before I can ask more.

Merit: Never mind. Forget I said anything.

Just then, Merit’s phone rings. He checks who it is, then turns his back to answer it. I step away to give him some privacy. I’m guessing it’s his crush. I rack my brain, trying to figure out who it could be. His side of the conversation gives me no clues.

I enter the house to see most of the family, including Pop-pop, sitting on the couch watching TV. Seeing everyone together warms my heart. Merit comes inside as well but ends up going straight to the computer.

Pop-pop and uncle Duane start up a game of chess. I go to the kitchen to grab a plate of the fantastic ham dinner prepared by daddy, then sit down with him and mama to watch TV.

The day has worn me out. I excuse myself to go to my bedroom just as I receive an alert to a text on my phone. It’s Byron. My heart skips a beat as I read the text…

Byron’s Text: sorry I haven’t been in touch. finals are kicking my ass. i miss you.

I  stare at the text for several minutes, trying to figure out how to respond. Anything other than the truth feels deceptive, but what I have to tell him should be done face to face. Rather than text back, I decide to call him.

Byron’s phone goes to voicemail. I’m guessing that he sent me a quick text in between study sessions or something. I decide to leave a message…

Prosperity: *leaving a voicemail* Hey Byron. So good to hear from you. We have a lot to talk about. I’m planning a trip out to Britechester to look at a few places in preparation for the Spring semester. Can we meet up soon?

I listen to the message a few times to make sure I’m satisfied with it before I send it. Then I change and climb into bed.
