We’re in the maze for all of five minutes when we hit our first dead end.
Prosperity: Well, this obviously isn’t the right way.
Kai calls out from behind me.
Kai: Let’s go this way!
By the time I turn around, Kai is gone.
Prosperity: Kai? Where are you? I told you to stay with me!
There’s no answer. I’m guessing he’s too far away to hear me. Now my efforts are less about finding a way through the maze and more about finding my son that I’ve managed to lose in minutes. I turn a few corners…
Prosperity: Kai! Kai! Kai, where are you?
Eventually, I can hear his panicked voice.
Kai: Mommy! I can’t find you, mommy!
Prosperity: Just stay where you are and keep calling. I’ll follow your voice!
Kai: I’m over here, mommy!
I turn a few corners and finally find him. We were only separated for a little while, but it was enough to bring out dreadful dark colors of anxiety and fear. But the relief I feel from seeing his face again causes the colors to fade. I pull him into my arms.
Prosperity: There you are!
After the hug…
Prosperity: Don’t do that again! I told you to stay with me.
Kai: I’m sorry, mommy. I thought you were behind me.
Prosperity: Make sure you can see me at all times. No running ahead! Do you hear me?
Kai: Yes, mommy.
Kai and I continue our adventure through the maze. This time I keep my eye on him, and he remains right behind me. I believe we’ve both learned our lesson about staying together.
As we stand at the exit, I receive a text alert on my phone. There’s a soccer game scheduled to begin on the Britechester college campus in a few minutes. It’ll take Kai and me about twenty minutes to make it back, but that should be in plenty of time to catch the game.
Prosperity: You want to go and see a soccer game?
Kai: Can I bring my soccer ball?
Prosperity: We’ll only be watching the game, not playing in it.
Kai: I know, but I still want to bring it.
Prosperity: Okay, we’ll stop by the house to get it on our way to campus.
After stopping by the house to get Kai’s soccer ball, we make our way across the huge Britechester campus to the gym. I’d think Kai would be tired after our long day at the Von haunt Estate, but he seems to have even more energy as he runs across the quad.
Soccer is not really my thing. I do a lot more crowd gazing than paying attention to the game. I couldn’t even say who won, but Kai seems to have enjoyed it. After the match, we head outside, and Kai pulls out his soccer ball and begins to dribble it effortlessly. There’s some natural talent there. I’m sure it comes from his father.
We drag ourselves back to the house. I warm up left-overs for dinner. After Kai has cleaned up and gone to bed, I spend some time working out because I doubt that I’ll have time to do any self-care when the next college term starts. It’s one of my last opportunities for some “take care of me” time.
