Waddell and I return to my place after spending almost the whole day together. Our first woohoo was amazing, and I’m not ashamed to say that I’m a bit impatient for round two. He’s more than happy to oblige. We’re almost completely undressed and making out on my bed when my cell phone rings.
Waddell: *whispers* Ignore it…
Prosperity: I can’t. It might be Kai.
Waddell isn’t in too much of a hurry to stop as he kisses my lips, then my cheek. I roll over on top of him before I become too weak to stop him.
Prosperity: I have to get it. It might be important.
Waddell: Okay, but please make it quick.
He’s on fire, and so am I.
I grab my phone and see that it’s Kai. Why is he calling so late? I climb off of Waddell and sit on the side of the bed before I answer.
Prosperity: Hello? Kai? Is everything okay?
Waddell sits up, suddenly very alert when he hears my son’s name. Kai is hysterical, and I can barely understand what he’s saying.
Prosperity: Calm down, baby. I don’t know what you’re saying.
My whole body is tense as he slows his words and tells me that my mother is gone.
I comfort Kai as much as I can, then end the call. Then I sit there, trying desperately to comprehend that my whole world has now changed. The tears come quickly, and Waddell is immediately by my side.
Waddell: What’s happened, Peri? Is Kai okay? Is there anything I can do?
I try to find my words through the tears, but I’m having just as hard a time as Kai. I take a few deep breaths and try to calm myself.
Prosperity: It’s my mother. She just passed away.
I know that Waddell knows a lot about loss. He’s lost both of his parents.
Waddell: I’m so sorry. What can I do? Please tell me how I can help.
Prosperity: I have to tell my brother. I need to see him face to face.
Waddell: Do you want me to be here?
I’d love for him to stay, but I don’t want my brother to know what I was up to while our mama was in Sulani taking her last breath.
Prosperity: No. I’d better handle this alone. But, thank you.
Waddell dresses quickly and leaves as I invite Merit over. He arrives moments later.
Merit: I was in the middle of getting my stuff together for the move. Is everything okay? Did you change your mind about me moving in?
Prosperity: No, I –
I hug him instead of finishing my statement. That leaves him more confused.
Merit: What’s going on, Peri? Oh, Watcher…did something happen to Kai?
Prosperity: No, it’s mama.
Merit: Mama? What do you mean?
Prosperity: I’m sorry, Meri. Mama is gone. She passed away tonight.
Merit’s whole body threatens to crumble. I grab him by the arms, lending him some of my strength.
Merit: Is daddy okay?
Prosperity: I don’t know. Let’s sit down, and we’ll call him together.
Meri and I spend the rest of the evening talking to daddy and anyone else who knew mama to tell them the news.
