Kai goes outside to meet his friend Liliana. She greets him with a big hug.
Liliana: I’ve missed you!
Kai: I’ve missed you too. But, I thought everyone forgot about me.
Liliana: No, I was out of town visiting my dad.
Kai: Oh
Liliana: But I was thinking about you, and I brought you a gift – for your birthday.
Liliana pulls out a wrapped gift and Kai opens it right away. It’s nothing big, more like a souvenir, but Kai is happy that at least one of his friends was thinking about him.
Liliana: Did you have a good birthday?
Kai: Well…no, not at all. I went to Sulani with my grandparents, but my Gran died while we were there.
Liliana: Oh no. I’m so sorry to hear that. Do you want to talk about it?
Kai: I’d like to talk about something else.
Liliana: Okay, anything.
Kai and Liliana sit down at the picnic table.
Kai: You said you just came back from visiting your dad?
Liliana: Yeah, he lives in San Myshuno.
Kai: I didn’t really go to Sulani because of my birthday, I went to go and find my dad.
Liliana: *hopeful* Did you find him?
Kai: No, but I found out that he moved to Evergreen Harbor. My mom is taking me there in a few days to meet him.
Liliana: That’s good, right?
Kai: Not really. I’m scared. What if he doesn’t like me? I tried to get real good at soccer, so we can play together, but I still suck. If we don’t have that, what will we talk about?
Liliana: He’s your dad, Kai. You’ll find something. Everything will be fine.
Kai: How can you be so sure? My mom told me that he stays away because he’s not good at being a dad.
Liliana: Call it a gut feeling.
Liliana announces that she has to get back home for dinner, leaving Kai alone with his thoughts and anxiety. He wishes he can trust her gut feeling, but she doesn’t know his dad. The only person who does know him is his mom and she doesn’t exactly have much to say about him. Kai takes off on a jog to try and relieve some of his stress.
While Kai is out with his friend, I try my best to regain my focus, but I’m still trying to make my way out of this fog. I sit down at my computer and see a message from Waddell.
Waddell’s Message: Are you okay? Let me know what I can do. I want to be there for you.
I want him to be here for me too, but I’m not ready to tell Kai about us. He’s going through enough. Why can’t my life be simple?
I respond to Waddell’s message, telling him that I need more time. I just hope he understands. Kai re-enters the house in the middle of our chat. I was hoping that being around his friend would lift his spirits, but he looks exactly like I’m feeling.
Prosperity: Are you hungry? I was just about to warm up some food.
Kai: No. I just want to go to bed.
Kai turns and goes into his room. Neither of us really has an appetite right now. The only thing I know to do to keep my mind from my worries is to study. So that’s what I do.
