Kai and I both oversleep the next morning, resulting in him almost being late for his first day of high school. He doesn’t have very much time for breakfast, but he promises to grab something quick from the vending machine at school before heading out the door.

I have two classes as usual today. I leave for campus, happy that I’m way ahead on my homework, so that’s one less thing to worry about.

Meanwhile, Kai comes home with a smile on his face after doing an amazing job on his first presentation for class. His grades are already up to a B. He keeps the momentum going by starting his homework early.

Once I’ve completed my last class for the day, Kai and I change and set off to meet the family in Willow Creek to say our goodbyes to mama. Daddy has taken care of all of the arrangements and has helped Michelle’s daughter Roni take of things on her end. He looks exhausted when I first see him, but he lights up immediately as we share a hug.

We gather along with Aunt Sophia and Merit to say a few words of remembrance for mama and Aunt Michelle. Then Kai and I visit the family tomb, which will eventually be the final resting place for both of us.

Kai leaves to give me a few moments alone with mama. Death is definitely no stranger to me, so I’m not surprised by the grief that surrounds me in a fog, causing me to choke on everything that I’d like to say to her. In the end, I make a promise that I’ll make her proud and that the Banks legacy will live on. After all is said and done, I leave the tomb in search of daddy.

I find daddy sitting next to Kai in the chapel. I think about what it was like to lose Gran and leave Sulani knowing that Pop-pop would live and die alone. I don’t want that for daddy. So I sit down next to him and lay out my proposal.

Prosperity: I’d like for you to move closer to Kai and me.

Quincy: I’m not ready to leave Oasis Spring and all the memories of your mother.

Prosperity: But those memories live on in us, daddy. You wouldn’t be leaving them behind.

Quincy: I don’t have the energy to start looking for another place to live.

Prosperity: Move in downstairs from Kai and me.

Quincy: You have a tenant, and I’m too old to be living with a college student.

Prosperity: I’ll tell Harvey that he needs to find another place to stay. I’m sure he’ll understand.

Quincy: I’m not gonna be responsible for forcing Harvey to try and find a new place to live in the middle of his term. Plus, how long do you really plan on staying there? You graduate soon and will most likely be moving on. I definitely don’t want to move twice.

I hadn’t thought about that.

Prosperity: What if I find a new home…one with plenty of space for you? Would you move in then?

Quincy: I don’t know. I’ll have to think about it.

Prosperity: Then I’ll start searching.

Quincy: Peri –

Prosperity: I’m not taking no for an answer, daddy. I want you near us. I refuse to let you continue to be alone.

Quincy: Okay. It would be nice to be around you and Kai. Find a place, and I’ll consider it.

Prosperity: So it’s a yes?

Quincy: It’s a – I’ll consider it like I said.

I’m going to take that as a yes.

We leave the chapel and make our way to the picnic area, where Aunt Sophia is cooking way too much food. We sit down to eat and chat, playing catch up on each other’s lives and sharing memories of mama and Michelle.

We eventually realize that we have not seen Roni in a while. Merit tells me that he last saw her in her family tomb. I head over to check in on her.

Sure enough, she’s still there. I step in feeling like I’m interrupting a very private moment, but she doesn’t protest. Instead, she slides over to make room for me in front of the urns of her parents. Her eyes never leave the large photo on the wall.

Veronica: That’s the day daddy proposed, and he and mommy decided to look into adopting.

Prosperity: Your mother was one of the nicest people I knew.

Veronica: That’s what everyone says.

We continue to stare at the picture in silence for a few more moments before I turn to face Roni.

Prosperity: My mom and your mom were incredibly close…like sisters. I just want you to know that you will always be a part of our family. You are not alone.

Veronica: Thank you.

Prosperity: Call me if you need anything.

I truly mean it, and I hope she knows that that applies whether she and Merit ever end up together or not.

Evening approaches, and Kai and I start the fairly long trip back to Britechester. Unfortunately, it’s raining by the time we arrive. We quietly make our way inside and quickly settle back into our normal routines of studying and just trying to get through the night the best we can.
