Waddell: Is everything okay…with your family?

Prosperity: Yeah, as well as can be expected. My dad is completely lost without mama, but I’m trying to convince him to move in with Kai and me, so I’m looking for a new place to live after graduation.

Waddell: Oh? Any idea where you’ll look?

Prosperity: I’d like to start here…in Windenburg.

Waddell doesn’t attempt to hide the relief on his face.

Waddell: Then maybe I’d better show you around.

Prosperity: Yes, I’d like that.

We get up to leave but get distracted by the busker.

Prosperity: Oh…I love this song.

Busker: *singing*

♫I breathe you in without fail,
And then I think twice before I exhale.
But you’re not mine to keep,
You tell me you want to be free.
Yeah you wanna keep it nice,
You want to keep it low-key…♪ (source)

We listen to the music for a while. Then I give the busker a big tip.

Waddell: I’d never heard that song before.

Prosperity: I heard it by accident one day while listening to music and studying.

Waddell: Can I show you around now?

Prosperity: Sure

We leave the café, and Waddell guides me up the hill to show me more of the charming Olde Platz area. We pass a small park with hedges shaped to form chess pieces.

Waddell: Not surprisingly, that’s called Chess Park.

But my attention is drawn straight ahead.

Prosperity: What’s that building there? The one with the for sale sign out front?

Waddell follows me to the building while he answers my question.

Waddell: That’s the old fish canning factory.

Prosperity: And they’re selling it?

Waddell: I’m not surprised. It’s been abandoned for years.
Prosperity: I wonder how much they’re charging for it?

Waddell: Probably not much. Why? Are you planning on opening a factory?

Prosperity: No, I need a home, and this might be perfect.

Waddell’s mouth still gapes in shock as I lead the way to the back of the building.

Prosperity: Look! That building would the perfect size for my dad. He could have his own space.

Waddell: Wait…you’re serious? Whew…this would take a lot of clean-up.

I climb down a nearby ladder and find a locked door. I’d love to see how big the area beyond it is. Maybe it could be converted into a gaming room of some type. I climb back up to rejoin Waddell. He continues to look around with dismay at the piles of trash and graffiti, but the artist in me can see beyond it. I can imagine a pool and a full backyard grilling area.

We walk up to the back door. To my surprise, it’s unlocked.

Prosperity: Should we look inside?

Waddell looks up at the dusty security camera that’s probably been out of service for years.

Waddell: Yes, I guess so.

We enter and step inside.

Waddell: *gags* Ugh, it definitely needs to air out. It smells like dust and old fish.

I look to my left.

Prosperity: But a kitchen can go here.

I step further in, impervious to the smell and the trash. All I see is potential.

Prosperity: *excited* And look! Here’s the living room and dining room!

Waddell: I don’t fully understand it, but I love the way you think.

Prosperity: What? Can’t you see it?

Waddell: I couldn’t at first, but I’m starting to, I guess.

I turn and head towards the stairs, but Waddell warns me that they might not be safe.

Waddell: Maybe you should consult the realtor before checking out the upstairs.

Prosperity: You may be right. I’ll call first thing tomorrow.

Excited, I quickly leave the property, unintentionally leaving Waddell behind.

Waddell: *calls after me* Please don’t leave me here. We grew up thinking this place was haunted.

I giggle and stop to wait for him.

Prosperity: Haunted? By what? Dead fish?

Waddell: *shrugs and laughs* You know how kids can be.

The apartment is still dark when Kai arrives home. He’s never been at home alone before. He’s frightened for a moment but steps inside anyway. He wonders where his mom could be. She never said where she was going.

After a long lingering goodbye with Waddell, I return home. The first thing I do is check on Kai. I’m relieved to see him safe in bed. I grab a quick snack from the kitchen with my mind on the old canning factory that I’d love to convert into a home. I’m not sure how Kai and daddy would feel about it, but I’m convinced that with some help, I can make the place beautiful.
