Kai isn’t sure what to think or feel about meeting his father. Nothing much has changed, and his father never mentioned anything about them having an actual relationship. Kai is sure that’s what his mother and father were whispering about right before they left. But, judging from the anger he could see on his mother’s face during the ferry ride back and her need to apologize, the discussion didn’t go so well.
Kai stares at Craig’s picture for a while before completely removing it from the wall. The mystery is over. Maybe he can finally move on with his life.
I wake up first thing in the morning to contact the realtor and begin purchasing the abandoned factory in Windenburg. If I don’t get started with the renovations, the house will not be ready anytime soon. After that’s done, I open my email, just as Kai enters the kitchen, and see that Harvey has sent me a message saying that he will be moving out. It seems that everyone is beginning to move on. This news makes converting the old factory feel even more urgent.
Kai: Everything okay, ma?
Prosperity: Yeah, but Harvey is moving out. I hope that we’ll be moving on soon, too.
Kai: Really? Where?
Prosperity: I found us a place in Windenburg, and it’ll be big enough to move your Pop-pop in too.
Kai: Okay, cool.
Kai returns to the kitchen to clean his empty glass and receives a message from one of his friends asking about his plans for Spooky Day. Kai honestly hadn’t thought about it with everything going on, but now he has an idea. He just needs to run it by his ma.
I move over to the couch to begin studying for my last few classes. Kai comes over and sits down next to me.
Kai: Is it okay if I invite a few friends over today for Spooky Day?
Prosperity: Define a few. This place isn’t big, you know. And it’s a school night.
Kai: I know, but I’m thinking about two or three.
Prosperity: Which means double that.
Kai: Okay, about six.
I think it over for a while. I have finals that I need to begin studying for, but I could study in the downstairs apartment since Harvey has moved out.
Prosperity: Yeah, sure. But make sure you clean up after. And you’re still responsible for making sure to do your homework.
Kai: No problem! Thanks, ma.
Prosperity: You’re welcome. Now get out of here so you won’t be late for school.
Kai leaves for school, and I spend the next hour trying to get as much work done as I can. Meanwhile, Harvey begins collecting his things for his move.
I complete my first class, which is where I give my final presentation. After that, I have one more course today and two finals tomorrow, then I’m free, which is why I’m surprised to get a text from Waddell asking to meet up tonight. He has to know that I’ll be stuck studying the whole time. I’d love to see him, though, so I text back letting him know that I’ll try to carve out some time between my study sessions.
Kai arrives home with a new friend from school named Wesley. He calls up the rest of his friends to invite them over. Then he and Wesley change into their costumes. Kai dresses up as the Grim Reaper, and Wesley is Darth Maul.
The rest of Kai’s friends arrive. Liliana comes dressed in a silver robot costume. Kai has no idea what Vern is supposed to be. Another new friend named Miki is in the same, albeit a more colorful version of Liliana’s costume. And Lincoln arrives dressed as a ninja.
I almost forget that I permitted Kai to invite his friends over. It’s not until I see a silver robot descending our stairs that I remember. So I go to the apartment downstairs instead. I’m pleased to see that Harvey has taken pretty good care of the place. Aside from a bit of cleaning, the place is ready to put back on the market. Speaking of “on the market,” I get a call from the realtor I contacted this morning.
The realtor has good news. They have accepted my offer, but with a few caveats. They can help with removing the machinery, but I’ll be responsible for the rest of the cleanup and I’ll have to secure a permit to have the lot rezoned as a residence. They’ve assured me that it shouldn’t be a problem because I’m not the first person to purchase a warehouse in the area to convert it. I end the call feeling very hopeful. Now I just have to get the permit and get someone to help me remodel the entire place.
