Kai: So, since this is a Spooky Day party, did you bring any treats?
Wesley: Treats? No, but I have a piece of candy left from what one of my teachers handed out. Here…it’s all yours if you want it?
Kai: One piece of candy? I really should make you leave after this.
Liliana and Vern walk over.
Kai: Did either of you think to bring any treats?
Vern: It’s your party, dude. You’re supposed to be providing the treats.
Kai: Yeah, but my Pop-pop taught me that you should never show up to a party empty-handed.
Vern: Well, here…I’m handing you my time and friendship.
Kai: Really? That’s it? What are you even supposed to be anyway?
Vern: Isn’t it obvious? I’m a villain.
Kai: *chuckles* I should have guessed because that’s exactly what you are.
Vern laughs and walks away.
Kai: So, Wesley…would you like to be a part of our club?
Wesley: What do I have to do?
Kai: Nothing. Just hang out with us.
Westley: Yeah, okay. That’ll be cool.
Kai and friends have gained another member; Kai turns on some music and encourages everyone to dance.
The party is almost over. Kai has one more person to invite to the club.
Kai: So Miki, I was wondering if you wanted to be a part of our club.
Miki: What’s it called?
Kai: Kai & Friends
Miki: Kai and Friends? Couldn’t you come up with a better name?
Kai: If you join, I’ll let you rename the club.
Miki: Deal! I’ll be glad to join.
Kai: Cool
Miki: I look forward to spending a lot more time with you!
Kai detects Miki’s flirty tone, but it’s hard to take her seriously in a costume.
Kai: *plays it off* Well, I’d better start cleaning up. See you at school tomorrow?
Miki: Where else would I be? See you later.
Kai: *waves* Bye, Miki.
There’s less movement upstairs, so I’m guessing that Kai’s guests have begun to disperse. I leave the downstairs apartment and see that one of those damn kids has kicked over the trash can. Maybe it’s their idea of a Spooky Day trick. I lift the can and clean up the trash that has spilled out.
Kai makes sure to clean up after his party. Having friends over was nice, but he still feels somewhat disconnected from everything right now. Kai changes into his pajamas and stares at himself in the bathroom mirror. This feels a lot like when his Gran passed away. Kai realizes that he’s grieving, but he doesn’t understand how he could be mourning the loss of a relationship that never was. Just like with his Gran, he knows that time will make it all better. Although he promised his mom, he doesn’t feel like doing his homework. Instead, he crawls into his bed.
I go back upstairs and look around. There’s no evidence of Kai’s party, so it seems that he’s done a decent job of cleaning up after his friends. All of my homework is done, but it’s late. I pull out my phone, ready to send an apology text to Waddell, but he responds that I’m not getting out of our time together. He says that he only needs a few minutes and has a surprise waiting for me downstairs.
I let him know that I’m on my way down.
Prosperity: * hugs Waddell* What are you doing here?
Waddell: I have something for you, and I was too excited to wait to give it to you. *pulls out a nicely wrapped box* It’s an early graduation gift.
Prosperity: For me? How thoughtful.
I take the box.
Prosperity: What’s in it?
Waddell: I wouldn’t have wrapped it if I was going to tell you. Open it!
I open the box and am shocked by what I see.
Prosperity: Are these Bailey Kay tickets? But how? I heard that concert has been sold out for a while.
Waddell: I’ve had them for a while. I was waiting for the right time to give them to you.
I pull Waddell in for a kiss.
Prosperity: I can’t send you away after a gift like that. Let’s go upstairs.
Waddell: But, what about Kai? Have you told him about us yet?
Prosperity: No, but I will soon. It’s almost midnight. He’s fast asleep by now. I’ll sneak you in and out without him even knowing.
Waddell: We’re too old to be sneaking around like high school kids, Peri. We need to tell him.
Prosperity: I know, but so much is going on right now. I will, I promise.
I can tell he’s reluctant, but Waddell heads to the stairs beside me.
