Kai wakes up to a text from his friend Miki, telling him about a music festival in Willow Creek.
Miki’s Text: Think you can come? Vern and Lili already agreed.
Kai’s Text: idk if my mom will let me go all the way to wc today. We have school tomorrow.
Miki’s Text: Then don’t ask. Say you’re doing something else.
Kai’s not sure about that. He’s not very good at being deceptive, but he’ll look foolish to his friends if he does ask and his mom says no.
I wake up to exciting hues that I haven’t seen in a while. I start my new job today! I get to spend my days in an art gallery, creating. It’s almost too good to be true. I eat a quick breakfast, then pull out my digital sketchpad to start a painting that I plan to finish while at work.
Downstairs, Q is happy to see that there is food already prepared in the refrigerator. He’s sure Peri has something to do with it. The idea of moving has weighed on him a lot, but he does not doubt that Peri will do everything in her power to make sure that the situation will be good for him. He has to admit that he’s been enjoying spending time around her and Kai.
Kai enters the front room and heads towards the kitchen while daddy joins us from downstairs with his breakfast in hand.
Prosperity: Hi, daddy!
Quincy: Hi, Peri.
Kai grabs breakfast and comes over to sit beside us, rather than disappear into his bedroom like he usually does. I’m thinking it’s because he wants to hang out with his Pop-pop, but…
…he has something completely different in mind.
Kai: So, ma – I was wondering…
I pause my painting for the moment.
Prosperity: What’s up, Kai?
Kai: There’s a music fest in Willow Creek – all my friends are going, and they asked me to come too.
Prosperity: Willow Creek is hours away, and you have school tomorrow –
Kai: *defeated* I knew you were going to say that. Forget I asked.
Prosperity: You don’t know what I was about to say. Let me finish!
Kai: Sorry
Prosperity: Did you do your homework?
Kai: Yes, ma’am. I completed it on Friday.
Prosperity: Can you be back in time for school?
Kai: Yes, I promise!
Prosperity: Then be safe and have fun.
Kai is shocked that his mom gave in that easily.
Kai: Thanks, ma!
Prosperity: You’re welcome.
Kai eats the rest of his food and hurries to his bedroom. Daddy walks over from the kitchen.
Prosperity: Please tell me that I made a good decision, daddy. Am I crazy to trust a group of teens to travel to Willow Creek alone?
Quincy: Do you doubt yourself?
Prosperity: A little. You and ma would never have let me do something like that at his age.
Quincy: Yeah, but we should have. It’s the type of decision we should have made with you. Then you probably wouldn’t have been so rebellious.
Prosperity: I wasn’t that rebellious, was I?
Quincy: Put it this way, to you – a curfew was a mere suggestion, not a rule.
Prosperity: *smiles* Okay, maybe you’re right. But to be fair, you wanted me home way before my friends had to be home. It sucked to always have to leave before the fun started.
Quincy: My point exactly.
Prosperity: But, now that I think about it – you and ma were right to be a little tougher on me.
Quincy: Why do you say that?
Daddy walks over and sits down next to me.
Prosperity: I wasn’t nearly as well behaved as Kai. If you had let me have too much freedom, I probably would have ended up pregnant even sooner.
Quincy: *deep sigh* I don’t even want to think about that. But I’m sure, no matter what – you still would have persevered and made something of yourself, just like you have now.
Prosperity: Thanks, daddy.
Kai returns to his room and calls Miki to tell her the good news.
Kai: I can go! I asked my mom, and she said I can go.
Miki: Good! Now we can make plans for what we really want to do in Willow Creek! Vern thinks he can get his brother to make us some fake IDs.
Kai: What? So the festival is just a front?
Miki: Yep, the perfect alibi.
Kai: But, I want to go for the music.
Daddy goes downstairs to enjoy some quiet time alone after Kai leaves on his way to the music festival in Willow Creek. I change into my work uniform and leave for work with a new mission for my life.
