Me-Me chooses to stay, and I’m glad she does. We spend the rest of the night into the early morning talking about everything, particularly our families and desires for the future.
Kai: Have you told your family about me?
Melisa: Of course, I talk about you so much; they practically know you. They can’t wait to meet you.
Kai: Do you think they’ll like me?
Melisa: They’ll love you. I know it.
Kai: I wish Henford wasn’t so far away from them. I want us to live near your family.
Melisa: It’ll be fine. And at least we’d be near your mom. Henford will just give them another place to visit.
Kai: Yeah, I guess so. Our future children must know both sides of their family. That’s important to me.
Melisa: They will. We can alternate major holidays and spend time with my family and yours. Or…we can invite everyone out to Henford.
Kai: That can work.
Kai: How many children do you want?
Melisa: I never really thought about it. What about you?
Kai: Definitely more than one – I always wished I had siblings.
Melisa: We need an even number of kids – so no one ever feels left out.
Kai: *drowsy* Yeah, and closer in age, so they’ll get to grow up together.
Melisa: *yawns* Oh and… *drifts off to sleep*
Kai: And maybe… *asleep*
Sometime early in the morning, Me-Me gets up quietly and says a silent goodbye. She has an early class and needs to get back to her room to shower and change.
I attend my classes and quickly head back to the house to prepare for a keg party that I’m hosting tonight. I’ve tapped the keg and made sure that the music is pumping when everyone begins to arrive. Me-Me walks in with her roommate Shania, looking beautiful as always. I pull her into a hug immediately.
Once I’ve greeted my guests, I head out back to ensure there’s enough juice out for everyone. I run into my old friends Vern and Liliana.
Vern: Dude, you have to be the first to do a keg stand!
Kai: Why me?
Vern: It’s your party. Here, I’ll hold you up.
Vern is not exactly my most trustworthy friend.
Kai: I don’t know about this.
Vern: Bro, I’ve got you!
I hold on tight to the keg as Vern prepares to lift me.
Vern manages to lift my legs, but I’m not feeling very secure.
Kai: If you drop me, I’ll kick your ass!
Vern: *struggling slightly* I know Hulk – just drink!
We manage to complete the keg stand, but Vern huffs and puffs as he lowers my legs. He needs to find his way to the gym more often.
Finally, I can check one thing off my college bucket list.
I reenter the house and sit down at the table, feeling slightly wobbly on my feet. Lil and later Me-Me come over to join me.
Liliana: *to Me-Me* Has Kai told you that we attended daycare here when we were kids.
Melisa: So that’s how you know each other.
Liliana: Yeah, we grew up together. He’s my best friend.
Melisa: It’s cool that you kept in touch over the years.
Liliana: I sort of thought that we’d end up together eventually. He was always the one I chose as my husband when we used to play house. Then, one time, we snuck out back and played ‘show me yours, and I’ll show you mine.’ Remember that, Kai? I never told anyone about that before. I guess you have someone new to play with now, though.
Kai: *shocked* What the hell, Lil?
I’m sure that she and Vern are still dating. So why would she say these things to Me-Me? Desperately trying to remove us from the situation, I get up to get some snacks and motion for Me-Me to follow me.
Kai: *to Me-Me* I’m sorry about that. I don’t know why she would tell you something like that. I swear it was just innocent kid stuff.
Melisa: I know, but she’s obviously interested in the adult version now.
Kai: Wtf?
Me-Me and I leave the kitchen to rejoin the party. I pull her to the side.
Kai: Seriously, Me-Me. I’ve never been interested in Lil like that. I’m sorry if she made you uncomfortable.
Melisa: It’s okay, Kai. I believe you.
Kai: Good, but I’ll tell her to leave if you want.
Melisa: No need. It’s me that has to go. I have some homework to finish up. *hugs me* See you tomorrow.
Kai: Let’s meet up at the library. I have an essay that I need to start on.
The party ends, and the guests begin to disperse. Vern and Liliana stick around for a few moments. I can feel Lil staring at me, but I ignore her. Eventually, they walk towards the door. Lil turns back one last time as if she has something she’d like to say, but changes her mind and walks out the door.
I’m left behind, realizing that throwing a party on a school night was not a good idea. I sit down and drink a sleep replacement potion, hoping to complete all my work before morning.
