I never intended on confronting my friend Lil, but when I happen to see her on campus the next day – I can’t help but approach her to find out why she would do what she did last night.
Liliana: Hey Kai, what’s up?
Kai: Nothing much. What’s up with you?
Liliana: I’m just leaving my Children’s Lit class and heading to the commons for lunch. Want to join me?
Kai: No, Lil. I meant – what was up with you last night? Why would you say those things to Melisa?
Liliana: I don’t know, Kai. I guess it’s because I’ve been thinking about you lately, and I wish we had a chance to see if our relationship could have extended beyond just friendship.
Kai: But you’ve been dating Vern since high school.
Liliana: That’s because you and that girl Miki were hooking up. It’s you that I always had a crush on.
Kai: I never hooked up with Miki. And none of that matters now. It’s not gonna happen, Lil. I’m with Melisa, and if you keep trying to sabotage our relationship, we cannot continue to be friends.
I immediately feel bad saying that. Lil was my first friend, and seeing the hurt in her eyes pains me. However, I’m willing to let the friendship go if Lil isn’t interested in being just friends.
Liliana: I’m sorry, Kai. I didn’t mean to get in the way. I value your friendship, and I want to keep it.
Kai: I value yours, too. But that can’t happen if my lady is uncomfortable around you.
Liliana: Okay, you don’t have to worry about me around Melisa.
I’m very relieved to hear that.
Kai: Thanks, Lil.
I turn and walk away, feeling much better about Lil being in my life. She’s helped me through some tough times over the years. I’d hate to see all of that end.
I make my way to the library to work on my research paper. Melisa is supposed to be meeting me there, but I don’t see her as I arrive. I go to the computer room, relieved that there is a computer available. I sit down to get started.
I’m working through my introduction when Melisa calls to tell me that she’s on her way. I let her know that I’m in the computer lab. We greet one another moments later.
She has some news for me, but I want to tell her about my conversation with Lil.
Melisa: You go first.
Kai: I just wanted to say that I spoke with Lil. You don’t have to worry about her anymore.
Melisa: You didn’t have to do that, Kai. I told you not to worry about it.
Kai: Well, now I’m not. What’s your news?
Me-Me sits down in front of the computer next to me to tell me her news.
Melisa: My parents will be here this weekend – for my graduation! My sister is coming too. They’re excited to meet you.
I almost forgot that Me-Me will be graduating. I would be as well, but there was a mix-up with my classes, so I have at least one more term to complete.
Kai: I’m excited to meet them too.
Which is true, but I’m also a little nervous. It’s important that Me-Me’s family likes me.
Melisa: We’re all supposed to go out for dinner, and they say they have a big surprise for me. I can’t wait to know what it is.
Kai: That’s great news, Me-Me.
Melisa: I’d better go study for my upcoming exams. I’d hate to fail and disappoint my parents.
Kai: You’ll do fine. See you tomorrow?
Melisa: Yep! Bye, Kaby!
Me-Me leaves, and I continue working hard until my paper is finally complete.
By the time I make it back home, I’m practically starving for something more than just ramen or warmed-up microwave burritos. So I decide to place a food delivery order with Zoomers. Thirty minutes later, my food arrives. I don’t even wait to go inside to eat it. Instead, I remain outside and eat while my friend Mo gives me a preview of a song he wrote for his girlfriend, Shania.
Mo finishes his song as I finish my dinner. Then, I use the remaining hours to complete my homework for tomorrow. Now that Me-Me is graduating, I feel the pressure to do well in my final classes.
