It’s the last morning of me waking up in student housing and living with four other guys. It’s also my last day living a carefree college life. Although I still have one more term left in school, things are about to get real. But I try to put it all out of my head. I have two finals and a presentation to finish up today. So, I reroute my focus to showering, changing, and making my way to campus.
My presentation and first exam went as well as could be expected, but it’s not time to relax and breathe yet. I have one more final to go. So I go to the student center, hoping for a quiet place to study, but some girl wearing an entire Sulani outfit approaches me.
Sulani Girl: Hey there! I wanted to invite you to the Sulani Students Association rally taking place –
Kai: Um, I’m gonna have to stop you there! I’m not trying to be rude, but I have a lot going on right now, and I need to concentrate. I’m sorry.
Sulani Girl: Well, damn…so much for being nice.
The girl gets up and walks away. I feel bad for being so short with her, but I have bigger things on my mind than some student rally. I need to finish my exam, schedule my move from student housing, and make my way to Mt. Komo to meet Me-Me and her family.
My last final is complete, and once again, I’m feeling pretty good about it. Back at the student center, I walk over to order myself something to eat. The same server is there from the first time I tried to order a meal here at the commons. It’s a shame that he’s been working here all this time, and I don’t even know his name. I walk over, intending to find out more about him, but he cuts me off.
Cafeteria Worker: Oh, hey there! Congrats on your graduation!
Kai: Um, I haven’t graduated yet. I still have another term.
Cafeteria Worker: So, you’re one of those professional students?
Kai: Professional student?
Cafeteria Worker: Yeah, the type that stays in school for years to continue collecting financial aid and never have to go out and get a real job. Smart move – I wish I had done that. Then I wouldn’t be working this shit job.
Kai: Um, it’s none of your business, but no – that’s not my plan.
Cafeteria Worker: Whatever, see you next term and the one after that – and the one after that.
I grab my food, turn, and walk away. No wonder I never tried to get to know the guy.
By the time I make it back to the house, I receive a message that my grades are available. Despite missing a few homework assignments, I did well. Now it’s time to move out. I go upstairs to pack my things, then realize that I still have a few hours before I have to be out completely. Since I’ve already paid for those two hours, I decide to use them by taking a nap.
I slept a bit longer than I had planned. I’m dangerously close to missing my flight to Mt. Komorebi. So I grab my things, change and head out.
My taxi drops me off in the Yukimatsu neighborhood located in the mountains of Komorebi a few hours later. The place is beautiful. I almost can’t believe I’m here. Visiting has been a dream of mine for years. I enter the rental and find Me-Me standing there waiting for me.
We embrace.
Melisa: Kaby! You made it.
Kai: I’m happy to be here, but you didn’t have to wait up for me.
Melisa: I wasn’t going to leave you to stumble around and figure out things for yourself. Here’s the situation – you’ll be sharing a room with Jay. There are two single beds in there. And I’ll be next door – bunking with Lia.
Kai: *disappointed* There’s no way Lia would switch with me?
Melisa: My dad did the room assignments. *daring* Do you want to ask him if you can switch it up?
I can already imagine the hell no expression on his face. There’s no way I’m doing that. So we’ll have to be satisfied with the way it is.
Kai: No, I guess it’ll be fine.
Melisa: That’s what I thought. Let me show you where you’ll be sleeping.
Me-Me turns and leads the way up the stairs.
Melisa: Bathrooms are at both ends of the hall. Your room is the first door here.
Kai: I think I may need you to tuck me in.
Melisa: *chuckles* I’ll take you in – that’s it!
Me-Me opens the first door and leads me inside. Jay has already claimed one of the beds, and he’s fast asleep.
Kai: A quick kiss, goodnight?
She leans in to give me one, but apparently, there’s no such thing as a quick kiss between us. We get slightly carried away, waking Jay up in the process.
Jalin: You two mind? People are trying to sleep here.
Jay gets out of bed.
Jalin: Next time, warn me so I can make myself nonexistent.
Melisa: It was just a good night kiss. Go to sleep, Jay!
Jalin: That’s what I was trying to do.
Melisa: Good night!
Jalin: Good night, and don’t come back!
Me-Me leaves the room.
Kai: Sorry about that, Jay
Jalin: Your bed is right there. Good night!
