Roni approaches me while Me-Me offers to entertain Terra.

Melisa: We have a swing set out in the backyard. Would you like to swing? I can push you.

Terra: Can I, daddy?

Merit: Yes, of course.

Terra: *to Me-Me* Okay

Meanwhile…

Veronica: Kai, I have something to show you.

Kai: What’s up?

Veronica: Remember when we talked about how your gran and my mom grew up in a foster home?

Kai: Yes, it was after my Pop-pop’s funeral.

Veronica: Well, I found my mom’s journal. Inside, there were some pictures. I had them digitized; would you like to see them?

Kai: Definitely

Roni pulls out her phone and shows me photos of my gran, Alida, as a little girl. Next to her is a toddler and some kid in a bear costume.

Veronica: The little boy is Darwin, one of their foster brothers. And the kid in the costume is my mom.

She then shows me another photo of them. This one has an older lady with a scar in it.

Veronica: This is the woman who raised them. They called her Mama Nadine. I want to write my mom’s biography, but I can’t do that without including your gran because she was such a big part of my mom’s life. So I have permission from your mom and, of course, Merit. I hope it’s okay with you, too.

Kai: Yeah, that would be incredible.

Veronica:  I don’t know if you ever knew this, but my mom was one of the first trans actresses in Del Sol to play the role of a non-trans female character. She started her life out named Micheal Roe, and your gran was named Alida Tate. They both changed their names when they came of age.

Kai: So we weren’t always Banks?

Veronica: No. Your gran wanted to start a new legacy for your family, and so did my mom. *pause* Oh, before I forget – I have something else for you.

Roni pulls out a box and hands it to me. I open the box and see that it’s a picture of my gran and Michelle, along with some copies of what looks like journal pages.

Veronica: Those are pages about your gran. I thought you should have them… *chuckles* just in case this book never gets finished.

Knowing this much about my family history is like a dream. It’s something I can pass on to my children to make sure my gran’s story lives on.

Kai: *emotional* Thank you, Roni. This means everything to me.

Me-Me and Terra are outside by the swing set.

Melisa: How high do you want to go?

Terra: I want to go high in the sky like a bird.

Melisa: Okay, let’s see what I can do.

After getting all the information from Roni, she and I, along with Merit, head outside, where they get a good look at the property.

Merit: You sure you can handle all of this nephew?

Kai: I’m going to do my best. Luckily, it’s what I’m studying in school. But, I still need to finish up my degree.

Terra eventually gets bored of the swing and sets off with her mom to play somewhere else. Me-Me joins me and Uncle Merit.

Melisa: I’m so glad to have had a chance to meet you all.

Merit: Same here. I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot of each other.

Melisa: I hope so. Like Kai says, you’re always welcome.

Merit: Right back at you both.

Kai: Thanks, unc.

Merit: Well, we’d better go. See you soon?

Kai: Very soon. Ma is dragging us out to Tartosa to start planning our wedding. Will you be able to make it?

Merit: I wouldn’t miss it for anything. See you tomorrow!

After Uncle Merit and his family has left, Me-Me goes inside to put up photos and start making the place ours while I walk over to the garden and greenhouse. Uncle M’s question rings in my head. Intimidation and doubt creep up on me as I realize that I have a decision to make. I could go out and try to find a job, or I could work the land full-time and make a living that way. The latter is much riskier, and I’m not sure if my school training is enough to prepare me for such a big task.

I reenter the house searching for something to eat and quickly realize that the cupboards and refrigerator are empty. There isn’t as much as a bag of chips available. I pull out my phone to place a grocery order, which I can already see won’t be sustainable in the long run. The cost of having groceries delivered is expensive. I don’t have a choice but to get some crops planted as soon as possible, or our future will either involve starving or going broke.

The delivery guy arrives, and I hurry to let him in. Although I hold my hands out to grab the bag, he walks past me and carries the groceries to the kitchen.

Me-Me gives him a generous tip. Now I see why he insisted on bringing the stuff in himself rather than just giving it to me at the door. I add up the cost of the groceries, the delivery fee, and the tip in my head. It’s too much. I’ll be working on getting some seeds in the ground first thing tomorrow before our trip to Tartosa. I’ll probably look into getting some chickens for eggs as well. I grab a bite to eat while Me-Me heads upstairs.

Me-Me announces that she’s going to soak in the tub. I don’t have much to do, so I undress and relax on the bed to wait for her.

Me-Me exits the bathroom smelling like a rose garden – incredibly sexy. She joins me on the bed and we waste no time breaking it in.
