It’s Me-Me’s birthday, which also means that it’s Lia and Jay’s birthday. She calls both of her siblings first thing in the morning to wish them a happy birthday. She finds out that both of them have plans for the day. Jay is currently in Sulani with his girlfriend, Justina. And Lia has plans to spend the day with Stefan, the guy she’s been seeing in Tartosa.
This will be the first birthday that Me-Me will celebrate without her siblings. It’s bittersweet because she’s glad that they seem to be happy. But part of her misses them and wishes they could be together for their birthday. Instead, she’ll spend most of her day at work because today will be her first day back. She’s not complaining, though.
She goes into the bathroom to clean and get ready for work.
Me-Me heads downstairs to get herself some breakfast, but she’s not alone for long. Dub makes his way down the stairs behind her with his best pouty expression plastered on his face.
Melisa: Have you come down to join me for breakfast, sweet boy?
Me-Me gives Dub a bowl of yogurt and fruit, hoping that he likes it. He tastes a bit of it. Me-Me braces herself, hoping that the entire bowl doesn’t end up on the floor. But Dub seems to like it.
Melisa: *relieved* Good job, Dubbie! That is how big boys eat nicely at the table.
Realizing that it’s Me-Me’s first day back at work, I quickly hop out of bed and make my way to the shower to get ready before she has to leave.
I’m down the stairs just as she’s walking out the door. Today will be my first full day alone with Dub. I’m excited to be spending some time with my boy, but I’m also nervous because I’ll have to balance farm work and taking care of him.
Luckily, I took ma’s advice and hired some help. Before I make it out the door, our new gardener, Evan, arrives and begins the menial tasks of watering plants, weeding, and spraying for bugs. I step out with my breakfast in hand for a moment to greet him.
Evan: I was admiring your tree here. What kind is it?
Kai: According to my mother, it’s a money tree.
Evan: A money tree? I’ve never seen anything like it. But of course, it doesn’t grow money. Right?
Kai: No, but the fruit is supposed to be very valuable. Hopefully, we’ll find out how valuable soon.
I leave Evan to his work. He finishes up his tasks and leaves for the day.
I go back inside to get Dub.
Kai: Okay, Dub. If you’re going to be working with me today, we have to make sure you’re in your proper work uniform.
I change Dub into overalls and a hat to match mine, and we go outside.
Dub enters the chicken yard behind me but steers clear of the black and white rabbit inside.
Wade: No bu-ny!
He seems to like the new baby chicks that I just purchased much better.
Wade: Hi! Not bu-ny!
