Dub wakes and climbs out of his bed. He knows his mommy and daddy’s room is only steps away, but they are not who he wants right now. He wants the nice lady who sings to him and gives him sweet treats before bed. So he crawls slowly down the stairs and opens the door to his granny’s room.
Granny is not awake. So Dub takes a deep breath and cries out in his loudest voice.
Wade: Ganny! Wake up!
She stirs slightly but doesn’t wake up. Daddy usually jumps up right away when Dub cries out. Dub decides that the extra tears aren’t worth the effort. He leaves the room and finds his mommy in the kitchen. What she’s doing is interesting but not as attractive as the tablet he spots in the living room.
Me-Me is glad to see that Dubbie is finally learning to entertain himself. That skill will be helpful when the new baby arrives. She finishes adding a splash of milk to the breadsticks she’s preparing and places them in the oven.
They come out perfectly toasted on the outside but warm and soft on the inside. Me-Me discovers that baking can be just as satisfying as cooking. It’s something that she’ll love to explore more during the next cooking class with Chef Hailey.
Melisa: It’s time to eat, Dubbie!
She doesn’t have to say it twice. Dubbie walks over, and she gives him a plate. He seems to like it and doesn’t throw his food on the floor for once.
Melisa: It’s Egg Day, Dubbie! Let’s get you dressed so that you can search for hidden eggs.
Dubbie doesn’t know what that is, but his mommy sounds excited, which makes him excited.
Wade: Egg Day!
Me-Me watches as Dubbie begins his search for eggs, but she ends up dosing off on the couch after a while.
I slept in much longer than I planned. Dressed in my work clothes, I go downstairs to see Me-Me napping on the couch and Dub happily searching for something.
Wade: Egg Day! I find eggs, mommy.
I almost forgot about Egg Day. It’s time to do my part. I decide to take Dub outside to continue his search so that Me-Me can get the rest she needs.
Evan, our gardener, is busy pulling weeds and harvesting plants. My job is to fertilize the watermelons, which have already grown much bigger than our last crop.
Meanwhile, Dub is still searching for eggs in the chicken and rabbit area. I have to stop him from accidentally grabbing the real eggs out of the chicken coop because he would have smashed them all. After redirecting him, he’s content to search the grass and rabbit hutch.
Evan tells me that the best way to make the most money from our harvested goods is to sell them at the Finchwick Market. So, I take his advice. I pack Dub up, and we head to town for the first time since moving to Henford.
Dub is so excited that he takes off running. It lets me know that we all need to get out more as a family.
I approach the grocery stand, where the owner – Kim, greets me.
Kim: Welcome to the Finchwick Grocer. I’m Kim; what can I do for you?
I tell her that I have some freshly harvested items to sell. She gives me an offer for it all, and we make a deal. I buy some sugar, milk, and flour to avoid the delivery fees of having them sent later. Kim thanks us, and we leave.
I spot a garden shop. Dub and I take off, walking towards it.
Wade: Pretty flowers, daddy!
Kai: Yes, very pretty. Maybe we should buy some flowers for mommy.
Wade: Pretty flowers for mommy!
Dub agrees, so flowers will be the first thing on my list. I approach the lady who runs the garden shop, but she’s not nearly as nice as Kim. She looks me over with a pinched expression.
Garden Shop Owner: We don’t allow kids to run around here unsupervised.
Is she referring to Dub?
Kai: Is that a rule?
Garden Shop Owner: No, but it should be.
Kai: It doesn’t matter because my son isn’t unsupervised.
Garden Shop Owner: You live at the old Conway Homestead.
My first thought is to ask her how she knows, but then I realize that this is a small town. It’s not hard to know almost everything that goes on here.
Kai: Yes, ma’am. Did you know the Conways? They were my grandparents.
I’m hoping she knew them and could tell me about them. Her pinch expression lights up in surprise.
Garden Shop Owner: Grandparents! I always suspected a scandal behind that Maggie Conway’s spurious smile.
I’m shocked to hear my grandmother’s name for the first time.
Kai: Maggie?
Garden Shop Owner: Yes, Judge Magdalena Conway – as she made sure everyone called her. You ask as if you do not know her name.
Kai: I didn’t exactly know them – or my father. What was Maggie’s husband’s name?
Garden Shop Owner: Chester Conway
A bored expression suddenly comes over the lady’s face, making her look like she’s forgotten how to breathe.
Garden Shop Owner: I do not have time to stand here discussing that family and their wayward son. Either buy something or move on!
I appease the grumpy old lady by buying a few things, mostly thanks for the information she reluctantly provided.
I’ve been so busy since I started running the farm that finding information about my grandparents took a backseat to everything else I need to do daily. But now, a seed has been planted, and I want to know more.
I figure the best way to learn about my grandparents is to get to know some people in town. There’s an information board to my right. I walk over and take a look at it. Sure enough, all the prominent people in town are listed there, including Agnes, the grumpy garden shop owner. Surely, someone on this board should have some information on my grandparents. I decide to start with Mayor Lavina Chopra, who happens to be standing in the square talking and greeting people. I walk over and introduce myself.
