It’s Dub’s birthday. So Me-Me wakes up early to dress him and Mason while ma prepares cakes and pies for Dub’s birthday party.

Meanwhile,  I complete a few tasks on the farm, then join ma in the kitchen for breakfast.

Kai: I can’t believe Dub is already about to be school-age.

Prosperity: The time goes quickly. The next thing you know- he’ll be grown and gone with kids of his own.

What ma is saying is more about me than Dub, but it scares me to even think about Dub being grown with a family.

Kai: So, about your art center grand opening – have you decided on an official date?

Prosperity: The opening is tomorrow. I hope you all will come.

Kai: Of course. I can’t wait to see it.

Prosperity: That reminds me. I want to paint a picture of you, Me-Me, and Wade before he ages. I want to hang it up in the art center tomorrow.

Kai: Yeah, sure. We’ll make it happen before his party.

I gather Me-Me and Dub, and we all meet ma out by the animal shed. We sit long enough for her to take a photo and start a basic sketch. It doesn’t take long. We’re done an hour before Dub’s party.

The disappointing thing is that we planned an outdoor party because it’s also “Sun”- Day, the first day of summer. But, we get clouds and rain instead of a nice sunny day.

We pivot our plans and move Dub’s party inside while still holding on to the hope that the sun will come out before it’s over. Just as our first guest, Uncle Merit, arrives – I take Dub to his birthday cake and help him blow out his candles. Then he ages up to a child.

The other party guests begin to pour in; before we know it, we have a full house. Me-Me greets her parents, her brother Jay and Jay’s girlfriend, Justina. The first thing Jalisa does is grab her new grandson and hold him in her arms.

Jalisa: He’s beautiful, Me-Me. Oh, I wish I could see him every day!

Dub finally meets Uncle M’s daughter, Brianna. She’s the only other child at the party.

Wade: Hi, I’m Wade, but my daddy calls me Dub.

Brianna: Hi! I’m your cousin, Brianna – everyone calls me Bri.

Wade: I’m glad you’re here.

Brianna: Me too. We brought a present for you. I hope you like it.

Bri gives Dub his gift. He opens it immediately and is happy to see it’s a Laser Show.

Wade: Thank you! I like it a lot.

A bunch of us are in the living room laughing and joking. Aunt Roni, Uncle Merit’s wife, keeps commenting on how good I’m looking and how she can tell I’ve been working out. I’m unsure how to respond to it, so I laugh it off and thank her.

Me-Me also hears the compliments and also picks up on the flirty tone that Roni is using. She doesn’t like how Kai giggles after she says it. But instead of addressing it, she turns and walks over to Mason’s crib. Her sister Lia has finally arrives. She’s happy to see her.

Melisa: Are you ready to meet your new nephew?

Jamelia: Yeah, sure, as long as you don’t expect me to hold him.

Me-Me lifts Mason out of his crib and shows him off to her sister.

Melisa: Mason, this is your aunt Lia. Lia, this is your nephew Mason.

Jamelia: He’s cute, but not cute enough to make me want one.

Jalisa passes by just as Lia says it.

Jalisa: *to Lia* I’ll be in sim heaven before you decide to take care of anyone but yourself.

Jamelia: Hey, I resent that. I take good care of our dogs, Merlin and Lady! And my restaurant staff  *pauses and adds*…and Stefan.

I walk over to catch up with my friend Mo from college, who is talking to Lia’s boyfriend, Stefan.

Kai: *to Mo* So I hear you’re a married man now! Congrats!

Maurice: Thanks, man. Yep – married, with baby #1 on the way.

Kai: Well, you’re welcome!

Maurice: For what?

Kai: You would never have met Shania if I didn’t let you tag along with me to the bluffs that day.

Maurice: I guess you have a point.

I reintroduce myself to Stefan since he’s standing there.

Kai: It’s good to see you again. How’s the restaurant business going?

Stefan: Very well, thank you.

We make a small talk, then move our conversation to the kitchen table.

Kai: *to Mo* I hate that our climbing club in college never took off.

Maurice: Yeah, it would have been cool.

Kai: *to Stefan* Do you climb?

Stefan: I do. I am quite good, actually.

Kai: Have you climbed Mt Komorebi?

Stefan: No

Kai: I haven’t either, but I’ve always wanted to. We should put together a team and plan a trip.

Maurice: When? You and I are so busy with families now. And we all work.

Kai: We can fit it in if we plan ahead. We can train real hard during the next two seasons and go in the Winter.

Mo pulls out his cell phone to check his calendar.

Stefan: I am sure I can work that out.

Maurice: Yeah, me too. Let’s do it.

While Shania, Lia, Merlin, and Jay catch up and talk about old times, Me-Me sees an opportunity to pull her mother aside to ask her something in private.

Jalisa: Aren’t you nursing? You shouldn’t be drinking that.

Melisa: It’s just sparkling fruit juice, mom. *pauses* Can I talk to you for a moment?

Jalisa: Yeah, of course.

Me-Me is suddenly feeling insecure about her and Kai’s relationship. Seeing how he easily flirted with Roni brought it out of her. But she’s unsure how to bring it up with her mom.

Melisa: Um – have you ever wondered if dad might cheat on you?

Jalisa: Your dad cheating? No, because I trust him.

Jalisa thinks back to that one moment in her marriage when she faced temptation.

Jalisa: We trust each other. Why do you ask?

Melisa: I don’t know. I’ve been feeling a little anxious about my marriage. Kai is an attractive guy. He works out a lot, and women notice…and then here I am, with all of this extra baby weight—

Jalisa: Stop it right there, Me-Me! You can’t let the demon of doubt penetrate your relationship. Kai loves you.

Melisa: I know.

Jalisa: You need to talk to him about how you feel. And do it soon – don’t wait and let it fester.

Melisa: Yeah, you’re right.

Me-Me thinks about what her mother said and decides that she’ll talk to Kai after all the guests leave. But, for now, she does her best to enjoy her family and the rest of the party.
