Me-Me joins me in the kitchen on the morning of her sister’s wedding. I watch as she begins preparing pancakes for breakfast.
Melisa: So, I have bad – or good news, depending on how you want to take it.
Kai: What’s up?
Melisa: Lia has decided that the wedding will be for adults only.
We sit down to eat before continuing the conversation.
Kai: That’s okay, I guess. I’ll stay here and take care of the boys.
Melisa: Unless we ask Peri to watch them.
Kai: No. It’s too last minute. She may have plans at the art center.
Melisa: That’s true.
Kai: Didn’t Lia ask Dub to be her ring bearer?
Melisa: She did. That’s why I was so surprised about the sudden change of plans.
Kai: It’s Lia, though. Should we really be surprised?
Melisa: No. I guess not. But do you think Dub will be disappointed?
Kai: Not if we don’t bring it up. I’m sure he’s forgotten anyway.
Me-Me gets a text.
Melisa: It’s my mom. Lia wants us all to meet in Tartosa in less than an hour for wedding preparations.
Kai: Are you going to be okay? You’re in your last trimester. All the wedding stuff will take the whole day and involve a lot of standing around.
Melisa: I’ll be okay. I just hope the baby doesn’t decide to make an appearance at the wedding.
Kai: Well, let me know if you begin to feel anything. I’ll come get you right away.
I clean my plate while Me-Me returns her mother’s text. After eating, she hurries out the door to meet up with her family in Tartosa.
The boys and I have the whole day to ourselves, so I quickly come up with a few things we can do to occupy our time. First, I decide to start by teaching them how to fish. Well, I wouldn’t be teaching them because I don’t know how to fish either, but I figure that Dub and I can learn together.
Wade: Do we have to use worms?
Kai: That’s what the fish likes, so we do.
Wade: But I don’t want to touch them.
Kai: I’ll put your worm on the hook for you.
Wade: But I don’t want to look at them either.
Kai: I’ll put the worm on the hook and cast the line – all you’ll have to do is hold the pole.
Dub is convinced – even though I’m sure he won’t want to touch any fish he manages to catch. After I cast our lines, we stand there, hoping for the best.
Mase is too little to fish, but he enjoys our time at the pond in his way. Splashing in the water is more than enough fun for him. However, I’m sure that all he’s doing is scaring the fish. That is until I feel my hook catch on to something.
Kai: I think I caught something!
I grip my pole tightly and begin to reel in my catch.
Unfortunately, it’s just a big, tangled mound of pond vegetation. I toss it back in and recast my line. But neither of us are very successful at catching fish. As the boys begin to get restless, I decide it may be time to find something else to do.
We end up visiting the Finchwick Fair with ma. They are hosting a cow competition; only it doesn’t seem to be any entries. It makes me wish we had a cow to enter. It would have been a guaranteed win for us. It might be time to expand our farm and purchase one.
After discovering that there’s not much going on with the contest, we stroll around the town center. Ma is happy to window shop, although I don’t get the appeal.
Kai: Ma, what’s the point of looking at a bunch of stuff you don’t want to buy?
Prosperity: If I don’t look, how will I know whether or not I want to buy it?
I guess that makes sense – but not really.
The judging for the milk competition begins, but there’s only one entry. Still, the sole judge Mayor Chopra takes her job very seriously and evaluates the entry the same way she would if there were 20 others. So maybe having a cow wouldn’t have guaranteed me a win after all.
