We pull up to a townhome in Newcrest. Me-Me walks up the steps to her childhood home, knocks, and then we step inside.
Melisa: Make sure to leave your shoes down here.
As we remove our shoes, Me-Me climbs the stairs, where her mother is waiting and greets her with a big hug.
Jalisa greets and hugs me next. It’s so good to see her. I’m glad she is doing well.
Jalisa: I’m so sorry to hear about Peri, Kai. She was an incredible woman.
Kai: Thank you!
Me-Me leaves the hallway and hugs her brother next.
Melisa: It’s so good to see you, Jay! It’s been way too long.
Jalin: It has! You have a nephew that you’ve never met.
Melisa: So do you!
Dray follows his ma into the living room and is shocked to see another person the same size as him.
Justina: Leslie, that’s your cousin Drake.
Melisa: Dray, say ’hi’.
Dray isn’t sure he likes having someone around that’s small like him. What does it even mean? Is he no longer the youngest and cutest? Nope, he doesn’t like it at all.
Jalisa finishes up the hugs and greetings.
Jalisa: *to Dub* Tell me every detail about high school. I want to know everything! How are your grades?
Wade: I don’t know where to start, gran. But my grades are good so far.
In the living room, Me-Me and Justina get reacquainted.
Justina: We’re engaged now.
Melisa: Oh wow! Congrats. Have you set a date for the wedding?
Justina: We think we might not have a big wedding. We’re considering eloping in Mt. Komorebi, where we first met.
Melisa: I love that idea!
Poor Dray is exhausted from today’s events, so he crashes on one of the chairs in the living room. I go into the kitchen and find Merlin preparing a big breakfast.
Merlin: Hey there, son!
I still love to hear him call me son.
Merlin: I hope you’re hungry. We have pancakes and omelets – and there’s also bacon.
Kai: I’m sure everyone’s starving by now.
Merlin rings a dinner bell, calling everyone to the kitchen to eat. We don’t hesitate to grab a plate and sit at the table. Jalisa suddenly speaks up as if she just remembered something.
Jalisa: Isn’t today your anniversary?
Kai: Yeah, it is.
Jalisa: *somber tone* What a terrible day to have a funeral.
Melisa: Mom, it’s –
Kai: No, she’s right. I was thinking the same thing.
Jalisa: You should do something while you’re here!
Melisa: We were going to stay at a motel, then head home first thing in the morning.
Jalisa: It’s not too late to change your plans. Leave the kids with us! We’ll send dad out to buy some air mattresses, and you and Kai can enjoy some time alone.
For the first time, Merlin doesn’t object to going out and spending money.
Merlin: That’s a good idea. We can set Dray and Mase up in Leslie’s room, and Wade – you can have the entire living room to yourself.
Jalisa: Yeah, it’ll be one big slumber party!
This gives Me-Me and me something to consider. Maybe we can salvage what’s left of our anniversary after all.
After breakfast, everyone scatters to different parts of the house to do their own thing. Me-Me spends time getting to know her nephew, Leslie. Jay invites Dub to his and Justina’s bedroom to play video games, and Mase finds some toys in Leslie’s bedroom.
Jay enters his bedroom.
Jalin: Do you like video games, nephew?
Wade: Yeah, but I’m not very good at this one.
Jalin: You should check out my gaming channel on SimTube. I post gameplay guides and tips.
Wade: *surprised* You have a gameplay channel?
Jalin: I do. It started as a hobby, but now it’s my full-time job.
That piques Dub’s interest.
Wade: How did you get started? I’d love to do something like that.
Jalin: Well, my friends and I set it up as a media company.
Jay gives Dub the details on how to get started as a social media influencer.
Me-Me and I are alone in the living room for a moment.
Kai: Your mom is right. We should go out and leave the kids with them.
Melisa: Are you sure, Kaby?
Kai: Yes
I pull out a rose and give it to her to show her how serious I am.
Melisa: But the only dress-up clothes I brought are what I wore to the funeral.
Kai: That’s okay. We can do something casual. As long as I’m with you – it doesn’t matter to me.
We kiss.
Melisa: Okay, let’s do it. I’m sure it’ll make mom and dad’s day.
We let Jalisa know that we’ll take her up on her offer to host the kids for the night. Then we sit down to try and decide what we should do with the rest of our day.
