There are only a few more days until Dub becomes a young adult. He’s looking forward to leaving some things of the teen years behind, like acne, school, and homework. But quickly running out of time for things like getting to know Perla better. Dub doesn’t know exactly what he wants to do with his life, but he can almost guarantee he won’t spend it here in Henford for much longer.
There’s another thing that Dub feels he needs to do before life takes him down a different path: spend more time with his brothers, particularly Mase. It isn’t lost on him that things have been odd between them, starting long before Dub moved out of their shared bedroom. Dub wants to fix it, and he comes up with an idea of how to do it.
Wade: So, Mase, I was wondering if you’d take a trip with me.
Mason: A trip? You mean, like drugs?
Wade: No, bro. I’m cool, but not that cool. I mean a real trip – a birthday trip.
Mason: Um, yeah – okay, I guess. But where?
Wade: You ever heard of Batuu?
Mason: No. Is that where people go to do drugs?
Wade: *chuckles* What’s up with you and drugs? No! It’s an amusement park. You go there, play dress up, and act out an entire space adventure. You can even choose whether to be a bad or a good guy.
Mason: Really? And you want me to go with you?
Wade: Yeah. It’ll be fun.
Mase returns to his plate and puts a forkful of his cake in his mouth.
Mason: *mumbling* I’ll think about it.
Wade: *slightly insulted* Bro, what’s the deal?
Before Mase can answer, he receives a text on his phone. His face lights up slightly as he reads it.
Wade: Who is that? A girl?
Mase blushes and hurriedly slides his phone back into his pocket.
Mason: Just somebody.
Dub doesn’t waste his time asking questions about it if Mase isn’t willing to give up the info.
Wade: About the trip –
Mason: *interrupts* Would we take Dray?
Wade: I don’t know. Do you think we should?
Mason: It’ll be his birthday too. It would be a little crappy to leave him behind.
Wade: I guess we can make it a Banks Boys trip. So, are you in?
Mase’s face lights up.
Mason: Yeah, let’s do it.
Wade: Cool. Now, tell me about the girl who’s texting you.
Mase’s expression hardens instantly.
Mason: Nah, I’m good.
Mase tightens the straps on his backpack, stands up, and walks straight towards the front door. Dub is left wondering what he said to cause such sudden animosity. He puts down his plate and hurries after Mase. Dray, who’s running late this morning, leaves a few minutes after.
After completing the farm work, there’s still housework waiting for me. With this big house, the work never stops. It makes me think deeply about my elder years. If I ever hope to retire, either Me-Me and I will have to move to a smaller home after the boys have all grown up. Or we’ll have to hope that one of them will be willing to take over managing the homestead. Whichever way it happens is okay with me – I’m just looking forward to a time when I can kick my feet up and enjoy an entire day without needing to work constantly.
Me-Me wakes up to some excellent news.
Jalisa’s text: The babies are here! Just like you, Lia, and Jay, two girls and one boy.
Me-Me is thrilled to hear that. She hopes Lia is adjusting to such a brutal introduction to motherhood. Me-Me sends back a quick response; glad she has the day off because she plans to spend most of it getting to know her new nieces and nephew.
Before cooking breakfast, I check the lottery results and see I didn’t win. I never expected to, and I’m not desperate for the money – but the idea of winning seemed so cool.
Me-Me comes down with a smile on her face just as I’m finishing up. My first thought is that I’m the one that put it there after the work I put in under the sheets last night, but I’m wrong.
Melisa: Lia had the babies!
Kai: Oh yeah?
Melisa: Yeah! I can’t wait to see them.
We sit down with our plates.
Kai: Lia with three babies. I cannot believe it.
Melisa: Neither can she. What if we had had three babies?
Kai: We did.
Melisa: You know what I mean – at the same time? Triplets
Kai: I would have been looking old like this years ago.
Melisa: We would have been okay. Don’t you think?
Kai: Not if they all came out like Dray.
Melisa: Oh, Watcher – you’re right about that. *chuckles*
