After everyone is in bed, I walk around the house, securing the doors, moving the wet laundry over to the dryer, and ensuring everything is in place. As the man of the house, these are the things that I always feel the need to do – to make sure that the work is completed and that my family is safe.
I go upstairs and listen to see if the boys are quiet and asleep in their rooms. They have grown up so quickly. Dub and Dray are both aging up tomorrow. Me-Me and I will be the parents of one young adult and two teens. I know that we’ve done all we can to guide them into becoming good men, but sometimes I can’t help but wonder if we might have missed something along the way. Did we spoil them too much? Have we taught them to be kind, empathetic, and responsible? It’s not too late for Mase and Dray, but is there some vital lesson we forgot to teach Dub?
I enter my bedroom and listen to Me-Me’s quiet breathing. Marrying her is the one thing that I know for sure that I did right. It’s been an absolute pleasure living this life with this beautiful, sweet, ambitious woman.
I step out on the balcony and watch over the land we’ve nurtured and cultivated together. I recall something my father said the only time I saw him. While showing me his garden, he told me, “It’s about giving honor to the Watcher of agriculture and giving the seed everything it needs to carry out its purpose.“. He didn’t do shit else for me over the years, but he did leave me with those words I’ll hold for the rest of my life. He also left me this homestead – a place where I could raise my family – my seeds.
I no longer hold anything against him. Now that I’m older and wiser, I realize that maybe what he did or didn’t do was the absolute best he could do. I can smile, knowing I’ve managed to do much better without him.
