Part 1 – To Catch a Frog
Location: Brindleton Bay – Skills Academy
Spring is springing, but remnants of winter are still clinging to the air when Maia Tilley steps on campus in the early morning. She’s going directly to her favorite spot – the newly constructed pond on campus, next to the science and arts buildings. The pond is not much to look at yet, but soon it’ll be a beautiful spot to study and relax between learning new skills.
Maia has the honor of helping make the pond a safe haven for as many species of frogs as possible. Actually, she volunteered to do it, but it’s an honor regardless.
She’s to catch the frogs that already call the pond home and assist with breeding them to create even more species. Part of her responsibilities include researching the best way to care for these slippery amphibians and going out into different parts of the Sim world to find more frogs to study.
She’s happy with her duties, but the best part is that it gives her an excuse to be outside as much as possible.
But volunteering to catch frogs doesn’t pay the bills, so Maia works as a freelance crafter. She makes money by securing contracts and fulfilling orders for juice fizzes, homemade furniture, and candles. When money is extra tight, Maia has no choice but to search for the materials needed to make these things by finding and recycling junk. Today is one of those days, so she heads to the dumpsters on campus to find whatever she can. This is the crappiest part of her job, but Maia’s never been afraid to get a little dirty.
Maia: *silent prayer* Don’t get caught this time! Don’t get caught this time.
Maia remembers the last time she got caught rummaging through the trash bins on campus. It wasn’t a good look, but she got off with a warning. If she got caught rummaging through the dumpsters one more time, the administrators would ban her from the campus for a week.
Maia finds a few things she can use, then hurries as far away from the scene as possible. She got lucky that campus security didn’t spot her this time. If they see the dirt on her clothes, she’s sure it’ll raise suspicion, and she could still get in trouble – so it’s time for her to get back home.
Maia lives on a tiny homestead where she raises a few chickens, grows some crops, and collects her frogs. She checks on her hen and rooster, Joni, and Chachi. Maia smiles after seeing that her beloved fowl are now parents to two baby chicks. She’ll have to think hard to come up with names for them.
Maia: *pets the rooster* You’ll be a good daddy, right, Chach?
Maia’s place is small inside but with plenty of free space outside. Her side yard is where she spends time with her frogs. She plans to fill this area with several species before her mission ends. She sits down and pulls out her journal. She has successfully bred her first frog. She jots down all the details.
Maia: *to herself, out loud* So, you take a Sunflower Frog and breed it with a DirtSurfer Frog and what do you get? Let’s see – what should I call you?
Maia thinks for a while but can’t come up with anything.
Maia: Let’s call it a plain Dirt Frog for now.
After recording her thoughts and observations and completing a sketch of her new species – it’s time for some self-care, which means dinner. But her refrigerator is bare, so she pulls out her phone and orders a grocery delivery.
The delivery has arrived, so it’s time for Maia to clean all the dirt and grime of her day away. She steps into a tepid shower and spends extra time scrubbing the remnants of her dumpster dive from her hair and skin.
Now it’s time for her favorite part of the day – dinner. Maia is a decent cook with a few good recipes in her tool belt. Tonight she tries her hand at making a fried chicken slider. It comes out great. It’s something she can see herself making again and again.
The day is almost over. Maia spends the last moments of her evening doing more frog research and listening to classic soul music – the kind of music that her dad always played at the end of the evening when arriving home from work. It’s times like this that she misses him the most. But she has to resist calling him. He was very outspoken when trying to discourage her from skipping college and moving to Brindle Bay to pursue this crazy mission. Calling him right now to tell him that she misses him will be like handing him an invitation to try and convince her to move back home. And that’s never happening – at least, she hopes not.
