It’s finally moving day, but not just for us – also for my little brother Dray. He and my parents arrive first thing in the morning with his stuff because he’s moving in here as Maia and I are moving out. Ma greets me with a big hug, and then…
Melisa: Do you have to take my only grandbaby so far away?
Wade: I’m sorry, Ma. But you know you are welcome to come and visit as much as you want. We have a second house now.
Ma transforms immediately into worried Ma.
Melisa: I know, but just the thought of you all being so far away –
Wade: You’ll still see us. We’ll visit too – I promise.
Melisa: Where’s my granddaughter anyway? I need to get as many kisses as I can.
As soon as Ma asks, Maia comes down the stairs holding Tambara.
Maia: She’s right here, all ready for those kisses.
Maia walks over and hands Tami to Ma right away.
Melisa: Aww, look how big she is already.
Maia: She’s learning how to turn over now.
Melisa: Before we know it, she’ll be walking and talking, and I’ll miss everything.
Ma has no shame about laying on the guilt. But I can’t blame her since Tami is their only grandchild. I’m just surprised Dad hasn’t joined her. I sit down and watch her coo over Tami, giving her as much time as she needs to say goodbye.
After Ma gets her fill of hugs and kisses, I walk over to Dray and hug him.
Wade: I guess this place is all yours now. Living on your own won’t be as easy as you think it is.
Drake: I’m sure I’ll be okay.
My little brother is over-confident, just as I was when I began my transition to independent living.
Wade: You say that now – but don’t forget to pay your light bills.
I give Dray the key to the place. He happily accepts it and turns to Ma and Dad.
Drake: It’s official! I have the key now!
I chuckle at the excitement and optimism I hear in his voice.
Several hours and even more miles later, Maia, Tambara, and I pull up to our houses on the other side of the country! We stand in awe in front as I look around at San Sequoia. It’s as beautiful as I remember from our brief trip when Luca gave me a jogging tour.
Wade: So, this is it – our new home!
Maia: It still looks just as I remember it from childhood when we passed it on our way to the market.
Wade: Well, it’s all ours now. Let’s see what the designer did with the inside.
We step through the door into a fully decorated entryway.
Maia: This looks just like the plans.
Wade: And we have a desk for our laptops. No more using them at the kitchen table.
I turn and walk through the door on my left. The garage has a washer and dryer, a foosball table, and plenty of space for Hiro and Luna to sleep and play.
I leave the garage, glad to see Luna making herself at home here. Maybe this will keep her off our kitchen counters.
Maia: I want to see the yoga room and the backyard.
Maia steps away with Tami and disappears through another door. I’m not interested in the yoga room because I know I’ll never use it. I make my way to the room next to it.
It’s a space just for me – all decked out with a treadmill and a complete media set-up. Filming my SimTube videos here will be fun, and I’m glad that Maia spared no expense. This room is the perfect place to get away and host a friend occasionally. I’ll be calling up Luca to come and hang out very soon.
I find Maia and Tami in the backyard. It’s a nice size, and I’m thrilled there’s room for my money tree. We also have a hot tub and a small frog pond for Maia. I can see Tami spending a lot of time out here.
Maia: Can you take her for a moment? I need to check out the bathroom real quick.
Maia places Tami in my arms and does the ‘gotta pee’ walk towards the nearest bathroom.
This gives me the pleasure of being the first to show Tami her new bedroom.
Wade: *to Tambara* Now for the most essential part of our house tour. Let’s take a look at your new bedroom.
Tami and I take the stairs, and after making a wrong turn or two – we finally find her bedroom.
Wade: *impressed* Look at this daddy’s girl – a room fit for an actual princess.
I take a look at her crib and notice that something is missing.
Wade: Well, not quite – but Daddy will fix it immediately.
I take Tami to the living room, where Maia is waiting, and place her on her playmat. Then I return to her bedroom. Tami received a new mobile for her crib that we never put up at our old house. Now, I have to ensure her crib has everything it needs to make her sleep more comfortable. I’m not handy, but I pull out my tools and put Tami’s mobile on her crib.
