The next morning, at breakfast…
Kisha: Why didn’t you tell me that today is your birthday?
Jeffrey: It just slipped my mind. How did you find out?
Kisha: I’m a detective…I have my ways. I’m going to throw you a little party.
Jeffrey: I don’t-
Kisha: *interrupts* Don’t try to stop me and use the pregnancy as an excuse. I want to invite my brothers over so you can officially meet them.
Jeffrey: I guess I can’t refuse you if you insist.
Kisha: You can invite Angela if you want.
Jeffrey: *clenches his jaw briefly before Kisha notices it* No…that won’t be happening. Just inviting your brothers is fine.
Kisha: And my friend Ebony…she’s like a sister to me.
Jeffrey: OK…and Ebony.
Kisha: Oh and I’ll even bake you a birthday cake. I hope you like chocolate.
Jeffrey: You are just too good to me!
Kisha’s first birthday cake comes out perfect.
Kisha grills up skewers and potatoes. Normally all of the cooking would have tired her out, but she’s feeling extra energized with the idea of doing something special for Jeff and having her brothers and their families over for the first time in a while.
Kisha changes for the party; finally feeling the effects of all of her hard work. She can already tell that she’ll need a nap, and perhaps a back massage before the day is over.
Slowly everyone begins to arrive. Kisha is thrilled that everyone she invited could make it.
Everyone sits down at the table; initially making small talk, until Greg announces that he has good news…
Gregory: Abrey and I are adopting a baby! He or she should be born any day now!
Trent: Good for you bro!
Kisha: That’s wonderful news…our children will be able to play together.
Gregory: Yeah…we’re really excited! I almost can’t believe that we’re going to be fathers.
Abrey: It’s a little scary actually.
Jeffrey: I feel the same way. Ours will be here any day now too!
Trent: *irritated whispered tone* Yeah, but when’s the wedding?
Jeffrey: Excuse me?
Kisha: You know Greg…I work with a lot of troubled teenagers. Did you and Abrey ever consider adopting an older child? There’s so many of them that need a home.
Gregory: No…why would we do that? We want to experience parenthood from the beginning. Could you imagine your baby being born half grown up?
Kisha: No…I guess not. I’m sorry to suggest it.
Maria: My mommy’s having a baby too!
Jeff seems to be the only one that hears Maria’s little announcement.
Jeffrey: *to Maria* So that means that you’re going to be a big sister, doesn’t it? I can show you a few funny hand puppets that are guaranteed to make your little brother or sister smile.
Maria: Yay!
Everyone else at the table continues their conversations while Jeff and Trent have a little quiet conversation of their own…
Trent: Oh…so you’re an expert now?
Jeffrey: Do you have a problem with me?
Trent: Yeah…I do because apparently my sister was good enough to impregnate, but not marry.
Jeffrey: We just haven’t talked about marriage yet.
Trent: If you were interested in marrying her…you would have talked about it.
Jeffrey: Don’t worry…your sister will be well taken care of.
Trent: She’d better be!
Jeffrey: It’s really none of your business…your sister is a grown woman.
Trent: My parents wanted more for her. Believe me…that makes it my business. Ugh…this whole conversation is giving me a headache.
Trent’s last words capture Kisha’s attention.
Kisha: What are you two talking about?
Trent: *quick response* Nothing!
Kisha knows that Trent is lying, so she ignores his answer…
Kisha: Jeff?
Jeff is beginning to realize that he should never have taken a seat between Kisha’s two brothers. He feels like he’s in the hot seat. He’d like to keep silent, but he can’t bring himself to lie to Kisha…especially after she asks for the second time.
Kisha: What’s happening, Jeff?
Jeffrey: Apparently your brother doesn’t think that I’m good enough for you.
Trent: *grits his teeth* And you’re a snitch too!
Kisha: What the heck Trent? I invited you here to get to know him…not give him the shakedown!
Trent: *doesn’t want to upset Kisha* I know…you’re right. I’m sorry!
Kisha: I’m not the one you should be apologizing to.
Kisha: Trent?
Trent: *stubbornly stuffs his mouth* I’m not apologizing to him because I didn’t say anything wrong.
Jeff can sense Kisha becoming upset, so he attempts to pacify her.
Jeffrey: *takes the high road* It’s okay babe…your brother is just being protective. I get that. You practically wore yourself out to prepare all of this food for us…let’s just enjoy it. No need for him to apologize to me.
Trent is not happy that Jeff’s statement makes Jeff seem like the bigger person. Kisha pouts a little at the fact that Jeff and Trent, two of the most important people in her life, doesn’t seem to like each other.
