After we’ve unpacked and picked out our rooms, the next thing I do is go outside to check out the pool. It’s what I’ve been looking forward to the most. Dub comes out to join me as I sit on the side, allowing my feet to dangle in the crystal clear waters.
Wade: I like it here, daddy. Do we get to live here forever now?
Kai: No, we get to borrow it for a few days. But, while we’re here, I think it’s a great time for you to learn to swim.
Dub looks down into the water.
Wade: *shaky voice* But, that’s a lot of water.
Kai: It is a lot of water, but I promise to keep you safe.
Me-Me and Mase also come outside to enjoy the amenities of the backyard. They find a pool just right for a toddler.
I convince Dub to get into the water.
Kai: Don’t worry; you can hold on to me until you’re ready to let go.
Wade: Okay
Kai: Now put your arms around my waist. I want you to keep kicking your legs as we move around the pool.
I swim with Dub holding on tight until he begins to get the hang of it.
Kai: I think you’re ready to try floating on your own now. Aren’t you?
Dub nods with enthusiasm, then asks me a very unexpected question.
Wade: Did your daddy teach you how to swim, too?
Kai: No. My father didn’t teach me anything because he wasn’t around.
Wade: Oh
Dub doesn’t ask any more questions about it, and I don’t volunteer any answers.
Kai: Okay, I want you to relax, kick your legs and use your arms like a paddle boat to move – just like I showed you, okay?
Dub follows my directions, and before he knows it – he’s swimming alone.
Kai: I want you to swim to that floatie, okay?
Dub swims over and climbs on the giant floating whale.
I’ve been eyeing the diving platform for a while. Finally, it’s time to put my diving skills to the test. I climb up and attempt a backflip into the pool.
Wade: Don’t land on me, daddy!
Kai: I won’t
Perfection! Maybe I could have been a professional diver in another life. I land in the water and swim a few laps before I realize that I’m starving.
Mase is enjoying his time in the pool. The best part is splashing his mommy and seeing her get all wet.
Melisa: If you splash me, I get to splash you back.
Me-Me gently splashes Mase’s legs and feet, and he kicks them in response while grinning and giggling.
I make my way over to the grill and prepare some skewers while Me-Me gives Mase a sandwich to eat. But the water play has only begun for her and Dub. They run over to the sprinklers while I finish preparing the meal.
We gather at the table to eat as a family.
Kai: *to Dub* Now that you can swim in a pool, maybe you’re ready to see what you can do in the ocean tomorrow.
Wade: The ocean!?
Melisa: Are you sure he’s ready for that?
Kai: Yep, he’s a natural.
After we’ve eaten, Dub gathers the dirty dishes and takes them inside.
