It’s the next morning, and I think I’ve made a decision. I officially make more money on my Simtube than on my job – with one video. What happens if I fully commit and do three or four a week?
Wade: *on camera* What’s up Simtube! It’s your boy, Dub. Guess what – adulting is overrated. Yeah, I said it! It’s completely overrated. I thought moving out would be about throwing parties and having all the ladies over. But the reality is that it’s about paying bills and being too busy to enjoy life because of those bills. The power company cut my utilities yesterday because I was so busy I forgot to pay the bill. And then there’s property taxes. Those should be against the law. Mine were over 3,000 simoleons. Yeah, it’s that wild. And about having ladies over – what are those? I’m still single. I haven’t gone on any dates and don’t have any friends. If you live at home and are in a good situation, I beg you – stay there as long as you can because this adulting thing is no joke – period.
I have another video completed. I’ll edit it and post it tonight. I still haven’t quit my job, but I can feel it coming – especially if this newest video does well. I go downstairs to check in on Hiro. He has taken over my couch as usual. I give him a big hug and grab leftovers for breakfast.
A significant factor that’ll play into my decision to quit my job is if I can get my money fruit tree to grow. I have moved it several times and even put it in a bigger plot, but it isn’t looking so good – so I call a gardener. It might seem ridiculous to hire someone to care for one tree, but this tree can make me a lot of money, so it’s worth ensuring it thrives – even if it initially costs me.
After hiring the gardener, I grab Hiro, put him on a leash, and head out for my daily jog. We run to the Skills Academy, but when I get there, I detour and run towards the beach.
But as I run past the Skills Academy, I spot that girl Maia again. She is out near the lake doing yoga or something. This is my chance to get her cell number. I leave the beach and run back to the Skills Academy, but when I get to the spot where I saw Maia – she’s gone. Where did she go that fast?
I’m not trying to look desperate by searching all over the campus, but I casually search anyway. I finally spot Maia near the door of the gym. But now I’m all sweaty and smelly. I can’t approach her like this. So I turn to leave, but just as I walk away, she steps out the door and looks right at me. My feet stick into place. Now I have a dilemma – I can pretend that I don’t see her and go home, or I can say hello, get her cell number, and stop this cat-and-mouse game.
Maia sits down on a nearby bench. I notice that she doesn’t have any shoes on. Anybody walking around with no shoes on probably won’t mind if I’m a little smelly, right? I take a chance and walk over.
Wade: Hi again! Maia, right?
Maia: Yes, hello.
What do I say now? Do I just come straight out and ask for her number? No, I better not.
Wade: I was hoping to run into you again. I uh – forgot to ask where you were originally from.
Maia: San Sequoia. It’s where I was raised and where my father still lives.
Wade: So, you’re quite a distance away.
Maia: It’s not too bad – just a few hours by car.
She doesn’t ask me where I’m from, so I’m unsure what to say afterward. Should I volunteer the information? What if she doesn’t care?
Maia: Is that all you wanted to know?
Wade: No
I completely forget that I’m not at my best, and I probably smell like hell. As I sit down next to her, I can see my mistake all over her face. I continue, trying to recover.
Wade: Sorry, I’ve been running and might be sweaty.
Maia: Yeah, I’m in the middle of a workout too.
I can tell that she’s just trying to be understanding. But that doesn’t excuse my offensive odor. Is she breathing through her mouth?
Wade: I’ll let you finish your workout.
I’m about to get up, but I stop myself. I can’t walk away again without getting her number.
Wade: But, before I go, I was wondering if we can hang out sometime – I mean, unless you have a boyfriend or something.
As the words leave my mouth, I wish I could suck them back in. Instead of sitting here making a fool of myself, I should have just walked away while I was ahead.
Maia: Um, no. I don’t have a boyfriend.
That’s good. But why is she looking at me like that?
She continues.
Maia: And I’m not looking. I don’t have time for one.
Wade: Well, I don’t either – for a girlfriend. And I wasn’t asking like that; I just didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes.
Maia gets up before I can finish.
Maia: I’m sorry, Wade. I have a long day ahead, so I need to go.
I try to stop her.
Wade: Yeah, same here. I was just –
Maia: It was good seeing you again!
She disappears into the gym, and I finish the conversation alone.
Wade: – wondering if I could call you sometime. To hang out, nothing more. Because I’m lonely as hell, and I need a friend to show me around this Watcher-forsaken town.
I probably would have left that last part out if she had stuck around, but I say it now because it’s the truth.
I lead Hiro back home and jump in the shower, reviewing the entire conversation with Maia in my head. I played myself, thinking I could approach her, smelling like I did. Damn it! Why didn’t I wait until I was clean and looking my best?
Oh well. I messed up, and now I’m too embarrassed to approach her again. Like I said, I’m too busy anyway. I spend most of the evening editing my video and posting it on Simtube.
I finish it with just enough time left to do my homework for my college classes, but I receive an alert from Social Bunny before I can get started. I check and see that it’s a DM from my cousin Bri.
Brianna: *direct message* Dub! How dare you live this close to me and not hit me up!
I send a response.
Wade: So sorry Bri. I’ve been hella busy.
Brianna: *reply* Come hang out! Tonight
Wade: Can’t. I have hw.
Brianna: Okay, tomorrow?
Wade: How about this weekend? Do you happen to bowl?
We message back and forth, making plans for the weekend. Then it’s back to work for me. I have both of my classes tomorrow and a lot of homework to complete before I go. It’s nearly midnight before I realize I haven’t started my work assignments. Oh well, I’ve been doing great so far. Maybe they won’t notice.
