We sit there staring at each other, happy to be starting a relationship. We kiss once again, but being alone in her room together provides more opportunity. Our mouths become more intense – exploring, hungry. I want to be closer to her, so I begin to remove her top. And then my own. Woohoo isn’t even the main thing on my mind. It’s more about the intimacy of having her skin against mine.

She’s on my lap. Her eyes are staring into my own.

Melisa: *quietly* I’ve never done this before.

Kai: Me either.

This would be the first time for both of us. The thought of sharing this moment adds more fuel to our fire. Her chest is warm against mine. I grab her from behind and pull her even closer.

Then I gently place her on her back. She stops me briefly.

Melisa: Do you -?

Kai: Condoms? Yes

I’ve learned to keep some in my wallet just in case. Our mouths meet once again, and it takes everything in me not to be so eager. But my desire for her makes me dizzy.

Out of nowhere, we hear the door to her room slam shut.

Shania: *sarcastic* Oh, don’t mind me, but some of us have finals and need to study.

Oh shit! Startled by her roommate’s sudden appearance, we jump up off the bed. Me-Me hurries and slips on her shirt. It takes me a moment or two to locate mine.

Shania: I’m Shania, by the way. It’s nice to finally meet you.

Kai: Uh – I’m Kai.

Me-Me is embarrassed to have been caught in such a compromising situation in front of her friend. And I feel bad to have put her in this situation. I hug her after I’ve replaced my shirt.

Kai: I’m so sorry.

Melisa: It’s okay.

Kai: *after the hug* I’d better go.

Melisa: See you later.

My phone rings as I leave the room. It’s ma, which doesn’t make me feel any better about the situation.  It reminds me all over again of what she’s dealing with at home, trying to plan Pop-pop’s funeral.

I wait until I’ve left Me-Me and Shania’s room before responding to the text that ma has left after I didn’t answer her call.

Prosperity’s Text: I hope you’re okay. I’m worried about you. I’m sending you details of daddy’s funeral. Call me!

Kai’s Text: I’m okay, ma. Just trying to stay focused. We’ll talk soon.

Ma is worried about me, but here I am, leaving my girl’s bedroom after almost being caught with my pants down – literally.

I’m sort of glad that Me-Me and I were interrupted before going all the way. She deserves much better than a stolen quickie in a dorm room. Our first time should be memorable – maybe even planned. That’s how much I care about her. It’s all I can think about as I make my way across campus. I enter the house and go straight into the kitchen in search of something decent to eat.

I finish my food, then pull out my book to get started on some left-over homework. Finals are coming up soon, and I hope I’m prepared. It’ll be a shame to flunk out of college my first year. My roommate, Yassine, joins me at the table while I’m working. Other than a quick hello, I’m glad that he’s not very talkative because I’m not in the mood for conversation. I don’t mind the quiet company, though.

After finishing up my work, there’s nothing left to do but head to bed. It’s just too bad that nighttime is when all regretful thoughts come out to haunt me. Luckily, reliving the feeling of being close to Melisa in her dorm room chases them away. Before I know it, I’m asleep.
